I traveled as backpacker a lot and prefer saying in hostels as best way to meet people from different cultural. Love lane Inn in one of the many hostel in love lane Georgetown - Penang state of Malaysia.
After few hiccup in registration, when I was told by manager / owner Mr. Jimmy that sleeper not allowed in the hostel. It is normal practice in some hotels in eastern countries. Next morning when I was told not to wear sleeper in the toilet it was shocking. I never seen such a unhygienic practice. Hand wash soap was missing. Breakfast was part of package. It was two slices of bread and Mr Jimmy or his staff stand besides you if you dare forget to close butter or jam lid. I have never seen such a behavioral with adult. I would rename this hostel as "Labor lane camp"
Last but most important, there is written notice in the toilet that used toilet tissues should not be thrown in the bowl but in a bin in front of you. That bin without lid. I am still travelling. Once I have time I will write to Georgetown City Council and the Governor of Penang state to look into this practices.
It is up to travelers to decide where to stay and how to stay but such a unhygienic practices are unacceptable.

If you want to stay cheaply for long days, this hostel is one of your choices.
But if you want to spend nights comfortably, you SHOULD shift to others.
The private room I stayed doesn't have A/C. It has a fan.
The shared shower room doesn't supply hot water.
From the entrance to stairway, it smells badly.
The staffs are not so kind.

We - a family of five - stayed for three nights at this hostel. The colourfull owner was very helpfull and gave good usefull advices about places to eat and buses etc. We had booked to rooms without AC, but the owner gave us two room with AC, without charging us extra. He even gave us a free lift to the ferry.
All in all a stay at the hostel can be higly recommended. It is situated next to little India and in the Unesco heritage area. The hostel has some funny smells and many rooms are small and without windows, but this is more than counteracted by the placement and the discrete charm of the oldfashioned building - and by the helpfullness of the owner.
Very friendly welcome from the staff, it was a good start. We went for one of the top rooms, double bed + window. It had been freshly painted, things were looking up. Then we went to sleep.... My girlfriend woke me up 1 hour later with the lights on to show me all the bed bugs which were crawling over us, our bags, the walls, the bed, the furniture.. Not good. We asked to be moved rooms, but there were none available. The guy thought we were being fussy and told us that all hostels have bed bugs, "you even get them in the UK, nothing I can do". So we ended up sleeping on the floor (and getting bitten all through the night) and checking out at first light. The owner then told us that he had just cleaned the room, there shouldn't be a problem.. So the story then unfolded, that only a couple of nights ago, the couple before us also found bed bugs and complained. We couldn't believe that they had actually checked us into a room which only a few nights ago they'd found bugs.. We moved on, only to find bugs had got into our bags, and had to spend more money washing all of our stuff, emptying out everything to check we got rid of them. We've been travelling for 9 months and have not picked up any bed bugs. Now in our last 3 weeks.....! Did we get any money back? No. So if you've made it this far down my review, please do not stay in this hostel unless they have burned all of their mattresses and replaced with new ones. They must learn that a lick of paint will not get rid of those pesky bugs & that they are contributing to the spread of bed bugs around the world by allowing guests to sleep in those rooms. Rant over.

The boss and workers in Love lane Inn are very friendly and so helpful for offering all kinds of information and suggestion. I will definitely choose to stay in this hotel again some other days if I visit Pinang again.
I stay here for five nights and found the staff very helpful and friendly, the rooms are really cheap but you get what you pay for, which is a bed in a room and a fan, shared bath rooms with cold shower.
the place was in a great location and only 15 mins walk from any of the local attactions. i enjoyed my stay here very much, jimmy and the girls were a great laugh, but the place could do with a lick of paint and new beds................
