Latest Review for Hostel Virreyes

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

People at the reception were very very very friendly and helpful. They have a nice restaurant in case you don´t want to go out. It was nice and clean -which is what I most look for.

The subway is close although I got a little lost at first (but heck, that´s just me).

I do recommend Hostal Virreyes.

About Hostel Virreyes

Internet Access 24 hour reception

Welcome to Hostal Virreyes, the only historic hostel in Mexico City. Formerly Hotel Virreyes, it was built in 1947 an functioned as one of the most important, elegant and prestigious hotels in Mexico City, with guests such as the Rockefellers, and important Hollywood personalities of the 1940's and 1950's like Piper Laurie, Barbara Rush and Rock Hudson also national personalities of the 1980's like Laureano Brizuela, Lupita D´alessio, La Banda del Recodo, or Flans. The Hotel Virreyes also had famous boxers and wrestlers as guests, such as Mantequilla Nápoles, Kid Azteca and Ultiminio Ramos, due to its proximity to the Arena Mexico and the important sports gymnasiums of the past.

In 2001 this famous hotel changed its focus and became the current Hostal Virreyes, but it continues to offer the historic tradition and magic which made it so famous in the mid-1900's. Now as a hostel, we are oriented towards a younger generation from all over the world, offering hostel service with dormitories and private rooms. We also offer residential services – room rental by the month – as well as regular hotel rooms so we can receive the former clientele of the Hotel Virreyes, principally people in the Arts. This mix creates a unique atmosphere which would be hard to find in any other hostel in Mexico City or elsewhere in the world.

The lobby, which was recently renovated, kept its style and you will find a unique atmosphere characterized by Art Deco furnishing with some psychedelic touches such as the elevator, which dates from the 1950's. But now in the lobby you can also plug your laptop into wireless internet access, as well as in our comfortable café internet, or while enjoying a beer in the hostel bar, both decorated in the same style.

The Hostel Virreyes continues to be an important focal point in the Historic Dowtown area of Mexico City. We often serve as a location for short feature films, cultural programs for television, and movies. Recently Canana Films used our lobby and some of the rooms and halls of the hostel for scenes in the film "Solo Quiero Caminar" with Diego Luna and Victoria Abril.

Hostel Virreyes will welcome you with open arms. Here you will encounter a unique mix of back-packers, tourists, residents, travellers, artists, musicians, writers and other guests who give this place the touch and atmosphere so different from other hostels.

When you enter you will find the tranquillity and peace you seek after walking in the agitated and chaotic streets of the biggest, craziest, and most folkloric city in the world. But you will also find that the lobby is occasionally transformed into a party place with DJ's and electronic music and bands of Rock, and Rockabilly, as well as an open forum for photographic and art exhibits, performance art, or the presentation of a new recording or book. You will always find something different which will make your stay with us a unique experience.
