This is a Trusted Review. Why?
The Flying Pig Uptown was an okay hostel. It is quite small and the stairs are fairly steep, especially if you are staying on the third floor. There is only one very small bathroom per floor, but the bathroom facilities were clean. While I was staying here (july 09), there was construction going on to expand the hostel, so it was quite noisy especially early in the morning (before 8 a.m.).

The newly refurbished Flying Pig Uptown is right in the centre of Amsterdam, next to Leidseplein, which is the best area to party! The Pig is world famous for its laidback atmosphere and friendly helpful staff. We have a guest kitchen and bar with indoor smoking area, where you will meet lots of people. Free breakfast, linen and internet; one price covers all!
Big Pig News: the new Flying Pig Uptown is open! We have a new cosy bar where all our guests drink, dance, hang out and meet each other.
The kitchen has re-opened and is there for everyone to cook your own meals, a good way to stick to your budget.
The hostel is located in a typical old-Amsterdam mansion, overlooking the Vondelpark. It is known for its great mix between a laidback atmosphere and the real Amsterdam party vibes. Many friends have been made in our inviting hostel bar. Cheap beer and many drink specials! The super friendly staff is always willing to help you with whatever you need. You can relax on the pillow stage, smoke in our indoor smoking area, play games, watch free movies or have some drinks without leaving the building. But if you do so, you won't regret it; the hostel is located in a very beautiful street next to the park, within a minute distance from all the action.
If you are in for some culture, the van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum (with the 'Nachtwacht') are just around the corner, same as the beautiful Concert Building and the 'I Amsterdam' letters. Do you want to explore the Red Light District, some historic sites or Chinatown? Just take a stroll, everything is within walking distance. Public transport is close by too.
But there's always more: go shopping at one of the local markets (such as the Albert Cuijp in the Pijp area) or the '9 little streets', drink a beer at the Amsterdam Heineken Museum or have a wild night out in the so-called pop temple the Paradiso, within crawling-home distance . You can borrow some free hostel skates and share a 'smoke', drink and a blanket with your (new made) friends on the green grass of the famous Vondelpark. Laugh your head off at one of the comedy clubs on the Leidseplein or visit other local areas of the city.

While I was staying here (july 09), there was construction going on to expand the hostel, so it was quite noisy especially early in the morning (before 8 a.m.). The location was great, right next to the vondelpark and an easy walk to Leidesplein with great restaurants, bars and streetcar access. Also an easy 5 minute walk to the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. A decent hostel to stay in if you are not planning on spending a lot of time in the hostel but exploring the surrounding areas of Amsterdam.

From Schiphol airport to Amsterdam Central Station
The easiest way into Amsterdam from Schiphol Airport is by train. Trains between Schiphol and Central Station depart about every 10 minutes between 6am and 1am, and once every hour between 1am and 6am. A one way ticket will cost you 3.20 from a vending machine, you will need some coins though. Trains to Amsterdam Central Station generally depart from platform 1 or 2. On www.ns.nl you can find all information on travel times and prices in English. When you arrive in Amsterdam you can choose between the Uptown and the Downtown Hostel.
To get to the Flying Pig Uptown you take tram 1,2 or 5 from Central Station. Get off at 'Leidse Plein'. Walk straight ahead towards the Marriott hotel, cross the bridge and street, then turn left. Walk past the entrance gates of the park. Then turn right on Vossiusstraat; at the end of the street you will see the Flying Pig sign at number 46.
