We arrived here around 4pm and rushed off to see the seals which were only about 2km walk south (past the seafood stall on the side of the road that cooks up fresh crayfish and mussels and scallops etc for you on the spot - very cool!)
The hostel looks out over the water (well the road and car parks first, then the water) and out towards kaikora central, around the bay. I had thought that this hostel was in town but that is not the case. Its about 20-30 mins walk depending on how fast you walk. They have only one taxi/shuttle service in town (according to the hostel) and they charge $8 per person, per trip to or from town!! We decided that was too much so we decided not to have a few drinks and drove into town instead. It was about 8pm on a monday night and the only place in town that we found open was a take out joint, which deep fry's their lasagne's! Not great....
There was about 8 car parks i think, out the front of the hostel and we were lucky enough to get one. The recpetionist was lovely and very knowledgable of the area. And they had a nice outdoor area out the front/side for the smokers. The twin room we had was comfy and quite spacious. A bit of a treck to the ladies only bathrooms though. And quite a good view from our window on the side of the building. We didnt use the kitchen facilities so i have no comment on that sorry.
