This is a Trusted Review. Why?
Compared to the usual type of high quality YHA hostel, this one was pretty dismal. I didn't know it at the time, as this happened to be the first YHA I ever stayed at, but the dorm rooms were very cramped (with the "ensuite" designation a joke; an absolutely tiny bathroom with barely room to turn around, shared between ten people), and the kitchen was just dirty (I remember the plastic table cloth being extremely sticky and icky).

100m from the beach, YHA Paihia is peaceful, central and renowned for its high standard of accommodation. Offering safety, comfort and friendliness, as well as ensuites in every room and covered outdoor dining, YHA Paihia feels just like home.
Paihia offers many exciting things to do - boat tours around the Bay of Islands, swimming with dolphins, kayaking, diving, snorkelling and sailing. Visit Waitangi, where the famous Treaty was signed, take a bush walk to Haruru waterfalls, catch the ferry to New Zealand's first capital Russell or just relax and unwind on the beach and watch the world go by. All of these activities can be booked by the knowledgeable staff.

-- However: Note that my stay was nearly five years ago now, so this place might've cleaned up a lot since then.
