Islas 8817 Guesthouse, Manila, Philippines

I was really dissapointed with room and the owner. I red some articles about him on some web sites including this site. But now, I'm firmly sure that he wrote them by himself. Actually, I believed an article and I went and staied there. He and the room were different from that. He was not friendly and kind. If you doubt me, you can try. And the room was not clean. The guests had to take off shooes before going into room. And the owner and his wife also slept in the same room(dom) with his dog. I couldn't believe that... But I only endured because the guesthouse was quite far from downtown. It's not easy to go back and look for another guesthouse. So I never go there. Don't believe these articles easily.

Uspounds stayed here in Mar '11

I write this for the owner's benefit as well as for fellow travellers. Much has been said of the owner's kindness and hospitality and would have recommended this place as a way to escape the Malate area. However, on my last day I was unable to wake up the owners after banging, shouting and whistling. The owner had forewarned me not to climb the fence as I might be shot by a neighbour believing that I might be a burglar (which makes me think this has happened before). So with other neighbours watching carefully I walked away. I eventually found a telephone and called at length their home number only for it to be unanswered. Frustrated, I had to travel into Malate where I had to stay the night at another hostel. Luckily I had the funds and knowhow of how to get there. I wouldn't stay here unless there is an easier way to notify the owners and access the hostel.

The people running the guest house are resourceful and kind.They even organised somebody to come and give me a massage for my tired of travelling muscles.It is quiet and spotlessly clean.

The folks running Islas are some of the sweetest people around. They made us feel very comfortable and at home. This hostel is located close to the airport and is very easy to find, which makes it convenient for a short stay on your way to or from elsewhere in the Philippines. The downsides were that the room didn't have screens and so was kind of buggy even when using a mosquito coil, and the water supply was unreliable. I don't think that that is a common occurence there, but it made us hesitate to stay again or to stay for longer without knowing when or whether we'd be able to take showers.
