Edinburgh is famous for its warm and friendly welcome and we more than match this at Caledonian Backpackers. Our location right in the heart of Edinburgh ensures that you are never far from various city centre attractions. The world – famous Edinburgh Castle provides a beautiful backdrop to our hostel.

Caledonian Backpackers provides more than just a bed for the night, we aim to provide our guests with a unique Scottish experience.

We have a full schedule of entertainment on offer. Sunday nights guarantee a taste of Scotland. Grab a dram of Whisky and tuck into the traditional Scottish meal of haggis, neeps and tatties to a backdrop of Scottish folk music. We also go international on Tuesday and Saturday nights with an evening of Salsa, free for guests. We don't stop at this, we arrange open mic nights every Wednesday and provide a professional set up. To keep you hydrated while you jam, we drop the price of Tenants lager to £1.50, the cheapest pint in town! If that's not enough, you’ll be pleased to hear our bar has a 24-hour licence, cheap drinks, pool tables and an amazing atmosphere guaranteed.

Our bright, newly decorated lounge is the perfect place for functions or chilling out and taking advantage of our free book swap library. We also provide high speed wi-fi throughout the entire building and free computer facilities so you can check out what’s on offer in the city.

You’re well covered when it’s time to eat. Our kitchen facilities ensure you’re well fed for the day ahead. We offer a free breakfast for all our guests, served from 7-11 am every day. Our spacious kitchen is kitted out with an oven, microwave, fridge, freezer and plenty space to sit, eat lunch and make new friends. As you’ll know there’s no shortage of quality restaurants and cafes in Edinburgh. Alternatively, pop next door to the supermarket and make the most of our self catered kitchen, you can cook up a treat with fellow guests.

Our rooms are centrally heated and come in a variety of sizes. You don't have to worry about making your bed, that's taken care of. The majority of rooms are mixed sex but female only dorms are available. Prices vary by day and room size so have a look online or give us a call before you book.

Our reception is open 24/7 and our friendly reception staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Check in opens at 2pm and check out is at 10am, but our common areas are open round the clock so you are more than welcome to chill or grab a drink if you arrive early or are looking to soak up our award winning atmosphere.

It is a great place to say the least. The staff go out of their way to make sure the place is kept clean. I liked the fact that they are all cheerful, it really makes a big difference. I was alone but never felt lonely. Great place!!

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

I stayed for 1 night on a work related trip. Booked a private room (twin) so my experience may be different to people staying in a dorm. Very comfortable, friendly and atmospheric. Would be a fab way to meet other backpackers. Good music in bar/living area. Great facilities... Highly recommend this hostel.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

I have no complaints with Caledonian Backpackers hostel - I thought it was lovely.

I'm not used to hostels, but understand this to be one of the better ones.

During my stay, the breakfast was fine - as much toast with various spreads as you can eat, plentiful filter coffee, tea and orange juice, available until noon.

The place was clean - i stayed in room 4 female dorm. I had two hot showers a day and never saw anyone else in there! the lockers seems reasonably secure and I could buy a lock at reception.

Staff were all really helpful and went out of their way to provide whatever you needed. They appeared vigilant re who was staying at the hostel.

The facilities, in particular the bar, TV room, computer room, laptops, wi fit, pool table, cimema room and fully fitted out kitchen were great. The bar seemed rarely shut.

The location was great.

No complaints whatsoever...I'd stay here again.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Situated at the end of Princes Street there is no doubt this is a prime location. The place is vast! I only stayed one night and it was literally just somewhere to put my head down for the night.
The dorms were comfortable, a little noisy from the traffic outside but nothing major. Pillows and duvets supplied. Bathroom was clean and there was loo roll!
There is a huge bar area with TV pool tables and sofas to slouch on, a vending machine for midnight choc attacks. Staff really friendly and there is oodles of info on where to go and what to do.
There were few people there at the times I was so hard to comment on the atmosphere. The decor is 'interesting'! Lots of murals and purple paint.
Security was good with card entry to the dorms, but remember to take your own padlock if you want to use the lockers. Staff looked after my bag for the day as I arrived real early which was great.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

I found Caledonian Backpackers to be a nice, warm and cosy place. The rooms and facilities are pretty much what you'd expect -basic, but more than enough to get you through. The staff are nice, it's a short walk to the Royal Mile, so overall it rates well. My only real criticism would be that it's a bit on the pricey side.

my first youth hostel experience in UK. Even though I almost got lost when looking for this hostel (completely my own fault), but I immediately fell in love with this hostel. Close to Princes street, the Castle, Grassmarkets, and if you want to go to Rosslyn Chapel, just cross the street to St. John's bus stop. Access is easy, kitchen is huge and comfortable, nice TV & internet room, PLUS: wifi access within your room... how convenient! Definitely would love to stay here again when I'm back to Edinburgh.
