I read some online reviews before deciding to book but was still a little wary. Verdict: A pleasant surprise. Check-in was quick and easy (couldn't quite catch all that the receptionist said but the little piece of paper with some sort of FAQs and rules have everything so it's fine).

Step outside our front door and the world famous EDINBURGH CASTLE looms above!!! - stay with us in our palatial hostel for a true Edinburgh experience. Inside, our hostel offers tremendous views over the city from our bright, sunny, rooms. We also offer the best facilities, everything from WI-FI internet to a movie room! A delightful garden-patio to a traditional coal fire for those winter nights! And plenty plenty more. …. being at the very heart of the city we are just a stroll from the bus, train and airport bus and though we are in a relatively quiet street (so you can get a good night's sleep), the city's wonderful late late night-life is just around the corner -ideal!
Built in 1846 and turned into a backpackers in 1997, rather than going the way of some of being a modern sterile hostile, we have packed this grand old edifice full of art, character and antiquity. We think you will love it. Some people say it is more an art gallery or museum than a hostel, but it's fundamentally a place to put your feet up and relax in comfort, or join in the fun with fellow travellers.
Our receptionists will always give you a friendly welcome and can help with any questions about what to see in Edinburgh or about travel around Scotland. We aim to look after you totally so you can have the best holiday possible. Here's a list of more that we offer…..

I read some online reviews before deciding to book but was still a little wary. Verdict: A pleasant surprise. Check-in was quick and easy (couldn't quite catch all that the receptionist said but the little piece of paper with some sort of FAQs and rules have everything so it's fine). It was somewhat a hassle that there are no power points in the rooms (you have to go down to the lounge areas for extended use of laptops, say) and I felt somewhat misled by the description of the location (it's a good location but I was under the impression that it is right in front if the castle and all when it is actually very near but below and require a climb up a flight of stairs in potentially a freezing cold day) but otherwise, everything was great. The people - hostel people and guests/backpackers - were helpful and friendly. Love the lounges (both the rowdy and quiet ones), hot hot showers and soft soft bed. They even rent out bath towels for those who forget and guests who've checked out (check-out is 1030am) are still welcome to use their lounges and luggage room while waiting to get to the next destination, etc. Definitely recommended.
As a hostel, this is excellent!!! It is clean, enough hot shower, friendly staff etc... But if you open the kitchen 24 hours, it would be great...
