This is a Trusted Review. Why?

It was alright there, when the hostel was not very busy. Even 12 bed dorm facing to back yard was quiet when not fully occupied.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

If you are going to stay at this hostel, please BE PREPARED. There are no power points in the rooms, so you’ll be charging your laptop and your phone, and styling your hair in the central areas. The showers are not hot enough, and have nowhere near the water pressure needed to wash your hair, the toilets are regularly out of loo paper. Bathrooms are co-ed. The cleaning that the bathrooms do get is fairly ‘lick and promise’ as can be seen from the state of the soap dispensers in the showers.

The rooms are stuffed with bunks, there’s very little space for bags etc. There are no in-room lockers, the only secure lockups are in reception, and they’re big enough for your laptop- just. They don’t have credit card facilities on site, so your number gets called in to a local hotel (so anyone in the central area can hear it).

You receive a sleep-sheet and pillow case when you arrive, no guarantees on the cleanliness of the sheet/ duvet cover (the washing machine works well, but the dryer takes hours, so think about using a local laundromat). The heating in a lot of the rooms is inadequate, so ensure you have a hooded sweatshirt, socks, and a coat to put over the duvet.

The central areas (one room is the billiard/TV/reception) are always heavily populated, and the TV seems to always be tuned to an episode of ‘Friends’. The entry is via stairs, so this place isn’t disabled-suitable.

The security is reasonable - you’ll have to press the intercom button outside the alcove and get clearance from reception before gaining entry without a key - or slide your key into the slot by the door in the alcove

The breakfast is cereal and toast, which is reasonable for £1. The self-catering kitchen is smallish but reasonably equipped.

The staff are generally pleasant, and make an effort to organise group activities – if you’re a joiner, this is great, but if you want to access reception because your electronic key has stopped working (which happened to quite a few of us), then you’ll just have to wait until they’re available.

Having said all that, this place is not dreadful, it’s very convenient (just across the street from Haymarket railway station, next to the Scottish Lib-Dems), near to a couple of local pubs, and reasonably cheap (except at festival time, when it’s exorbitant). They do have Wi-Fi throughout (but if you want power, you’ll be charging in the central areas), which is good enough to stream video. If you’re adequately prepared, travelling on the cheap, and you’re the type who likes to join in on trips to the pub etc, then you’ll probably have a great stay here.
