We were very happy and pleased about the reception that we got from a lady called Rainbow. She was very pleasant and came all the way to pick us up at the station etc. However, her pleasantries were short lived.
We had pre planned our trip and had planned to experience the nature in and around on our own. As soon as she realised that we would not be using treks organised by the trekker camp, we saw a completely different rainbow. They tried to swindle as much money as they could from us by overcharging and being rude. We took 2 of their bikes (at far above market rates). However, we had to change the flat tires thrice and finally, as we had a flat tire late into the night, we had to tow it to the trekker camp in a taxi. The repair and towing cost us more than twice the rent for the bike. The next day, 2 hooligans harrassed us to pay 250 bahts to get the flat tire repaired (we had paid 100 bahts while we got theim repaired). It was not the money, but the meanness of the people that frustrated us, as this is not the general behaviour we got in Thailand (especially Chiangmai/ Chiang Dao area)

In all, the trekker camp was the only sore spot in our entire trip. So, all that we can say is that stay at the trekker camp is recommended ONLY if one intends to use treks organised by trekker camp, otherwise be prepared for rude behaviour.

Great place to stay if you're basing yourself for treks- we weren't. If you're in Chiang Mai for Chiang Mai then I'd advise somewhere closer. We walked (attempted to!) to the centre and it took quite a while. Tuk-tuks and the like are readily available on the main road however.
Really nice place though, and in a very nice, quiet area. Just the disance to the main sights is the difficulty.
