Sunday May 3rd - Intertribal Powwow

Shhhhhh.. This one doesn't get advertised. A sort of underground you have to know someone who knows someone yearly festival - the Intertribal Powwow really doesn't have anything to do with Native American Culture. It does have a lot to do with unique musical performances, lots of beer, maybe some 'illegal substances', a bonfire or two, and all taking places directly on the shore of the river. You can walk, bus, drive, or boat your way into the days events. What used to be a serene landscape of water marshes and views of the Chesapeake Bay, is now home to a Walmart. However, the festival still happens behind the Walmart and you still have some pretty good views, especially at sunset.

Sunday May 24th - Sowebo Arts Festival

The Sowebohemian Arts Festival turns 21 this year, it is held every Memorial Day weekend Sunday surrounding historic Hollins Market. The festival presents Baltimore's largest free music venue presenting over 40 bands with 3 blocks of Arts & Crafts vendors, puppet shows, outdoor sculpture, and kid's art & fun. We showcase the large salon style non-juried art exhibit in the cavernous Carriage House Gallery. FREE!

June 13th and 14th - Hon Fest

To understand the Hon Fest you must first read up on your 'bawlamarese'. This is a celebration of Baltimore and its cultural history. The festival is held in Hampden made famous by the John Waters movie Pecker, which depicts the live of a typical traditional Baltimore family. Break out your largest pink beehive, large glasses, and tacky dress to participate in the annual Baltimore Hon competition. Tons of music, food, vendors, and drinks make this a must attend event. FREE!

Every Thursday July 2nd - August 13th - Flicks from the Hill

Baltimore explodes with FREE outdoor movie events throughout the summer. From the pier of Fells Point to the streets of Little Italy to the high rise surrounded square just a shot walk from the hostel - Baltimore is all about watching movies under the stars. The best of them all are the Flicks from the Hill events hosted by the American Visionary Art Museum. Rest on the huge sloping hillside of Federal Hill Park to watch movies projected on the side of the AVAM building. Movies start at 9pm and are FREE!!! BOYB.

Street parking is available at $1 an hour, though during rush hour times there is no parking on the streets. If parking your car on the street be aware of the signs. Towing is enforced in the downtown area and it brings a steep fine of $260. A number of garages are available in the area and they range from $8 to $20 a day (you pay that every time you come and go). You should reserve parking if you want to use parking behind the Hostel.

From the Airport
BWI Airport:

For a complete schedule and times of operation see:
http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/lightrail/
$1.60 one way
$3.50 all day unlimited pass (good for all mass transit)

From BWI take the light rail to the Lexington Market Stop. Make your first right onto Saratoga Street. Walk three blocks (1/2 mile) and turn left onto Liberty Street. Walk one block and make a right onto Mulberry Street. The hostel is the second door on your right, 17 West Mulberry Street.

To take a taxi from the airport it will be an average of $23.00

The BWI Super Shuttle offers travel to Downtown from 4am to Midnight. It is $20 the first person and $5 each additional person. They will drop you off at the hostel. Tell them you are going to the Baltimore Hostel at 17 West Mulberry Street.

Dulles International:

There is no quick and inexpensive direct route to Baltimore City from Dulles International Airport. If you want a direct service you would need to use a taxi or shuttle service. A taxi or shuttle service would range from $30 to $60. For a less expensive alternative you can take the metro bus to the DC metro and then take the DC metro to Union Station. From there you can take the MARC Train (Monday through Friday ONLY) to Baltimore City and get off at Penn Station. The MARC train is $7 one way. On days when the MARC train is not running you can take the Metro bus to the DC metro and then take the DC metro to the Greenbelt Station. From there you would need to take the Metro Bus from the Greenbelt Station to BWI Airport. From the BWI Airport you can take the Light Rail into Baltimore City. Following directions for Light Rail from there.

From the Bus Station
To get to the Hostel from the Downtown Bus Station:
From the Greyhound bus station take the #27 bus to the stop near Saratoga Street. Walk east on Saratoga Street (the numbers will be going down) for three blocks. Turn left onto Liberty Street and walk one block. Turn right onto Mulberry Street. The hostel is the second door on your right, 17 West Mulberry Street.

We do not recommend walking from the downtown bus station. The bus station was recently moved slightly out of the city and is in an industrial area. The walk is easy enough, however you will be walking through areas that have a lot of old industrial buildings and not a lot of people on the street.

A taxi from Greyhound will cost $8.00 to $12.00 depending upon traffic.

To get to the Hostel from the Travel Plaza:
Take the #20 bus towards downtown. Get off at the intersection of Fayette and Charles Streets. Walk north (with the flow of traffic) on Charles Street for 3 blocks. Turn left at Mulberry Street. The hostel is located near the intersection of Cathedral and Mulberry Streets on your left hand side. A bus ride from the Travel Plaza will take roughly 40 minutes.

Chinatown Bus
If you are traveling between Baltimore City and New York City, the following bus company will drop you off and pick you up just a few blocks from the hostel - http://www.aabus.com/index.html. They are much cheaper than Greyhound or any other service. To get from their drop off point - 104 North Liberty, walk North on Liberty Street for three blocks (the numbers will be going up). Turn right onto Mulberry Street. The hostel is the second door on your right, 17 West Mulberry Street.
