This is a Trusted Review. Why?

At first we were excited to find a place so reasonably priced in such a good location near the old port. But it was not what we were hoping for. When we arrived mid afternoon our first day, it took us 20 minutes to find someone to help us. It seemed like an abandoned construction site! There was no one around, and the hallway/lobby was packed with tile cutters, tiles to be installed, random doors propped against the wall. Everything was covered with dust from the remodelling they are doing.

Our room was clean and simple and the bed was basic but comfy. The tile cutting the next morning did not make it a restful place to hangout though. The main office person was very helpful when he was around--giving us an extra blanket, and finding a plug for the bath tub. (The water was warm early in the evening for a bath, but later on it did not get warm at all.) It was just very hard to find him when you needed him. He encouraged us to switch to a private bathroom instead of the breakfast that we had reserved with the room... so not sure what the breakfast was like.

Perhaps the most difficult part of staying at the Casa de Mateo was figuring out the parking situation. There are four parking lots near the hotel, where you need to figure out the rates, the machines (some are staffed, but not at all hours), and we had to get up at all hours to try to make sure our car didn't get towed (after midnight, before 6AM). It was all very confusing. I would recommend that the hotels in the area all work together with one of the lots and make a simple plan that is easy for the guests to follow and understand--especially if they are English speaking visitors not use to cities in general.

I imagine in the busier season, once the construction is over, this place will get running more smoothly. I think we were one of two rooms being occupied while we were there. Next time we would stay somewhere else.

The location is perfect, right in the Old Montreal, which is really a tourist area. The room was very clean; they gave us towels, shampoo and soap too. We even had a TV in the room and good heating. Breakfast was included, which was really nice. For the price, you really can't ask for more. The only downside is probably that the walls are thin, so you could hear the cars passing by in the street, even though there weren't many cars outside. Since we were there during off-season, in the winter, the noise wasn't too bad since there weren't many people staying at the hotel. Overall, we enjoyed our stay there and would definitely come back again.

For those who want no frills stay... then i suppose this is a place which offers reasonable value for money because it is not easy to find a place in Montreal for CAD$60 and breakfast inclusive...

The only qualms i have is that it doesn't have parking facilities, don't change the towels and the washroom is always smoky. Other than that, i guess the room is alright....
