This is a Trusted Review. Why?
We stayed here over christmas after numerous stops throughout the USA. This is by far the worst hostel we stayed in during our entire 3 1/2 month trip. The staff were beyond rude, incredibly unhelpful and quite frankly could not care less. There were no activities organised for christmas, even though numerous other visitors asked for this as there were no facilities open in the surrounding area - the other visitors ended up organising something themselves.

HI-DC & THE ENVIRONMENT
We are committed to being stewards of the environment. However, we do not view our environmental responsibility as a destination. Rather, we see it as a continuous journey. Here is a list of things we are doing and that we plan to do in the next year:
At this time, the only hostel in the world to be Energy Star certified (meaning that its energy consumption is among the lowest of all properties in the economy lodging sector)
The only hostel in the DC area to be designated an Eco-Friendly hostel by Hostel World
The lowest water consumption per overnight guest of all HI's Gateway City properties
Currently renovating all guest rooms using low VOC paint and carpet that is low VOC, made from recycled materials, and is itself 100% recyclable
Follow a linen re-use program to conserve water (during a hosteler stay, linens are washed only by request)
All paper (office paper, toilet tissue, and hand towels) is from at lest 95% recycled materials
Recycle Aluminum, Glass, Paper, Plastic, Cardboard, Batteries, and ink/toner cartridges
Use (and then recycle) compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) throughout the hostel
Have monthly documentary movie nights on environmental topics
Have push faucets on all sinks (the timer reduces water consumption)
Use low-flow aerators on all sink faucets
Provide environmentally friendly dish soap in the kitchen
Have all re-usable products in the kitchen and for breakfast (no disposables)

The staff were beyond rude, incredibly unhelpful and quite frankly could not care less. There were no activities organised for christmas, even though numerous other visitors asked for this as there were no facilities open in the surrounding area - the other visitors ended up organising something themselves. The lifts were slow, the rooms were ridiculously hot and to top it all off we got bed bugs! Oh, and the staff couldnt have been any ruder about the whole experience. We were made to feel like filthy vermon for getting bed bugs and they refused to help us in any way. We had to wash our entire contents - at cost to us - before we could move rooms - and it was nearly midnight before we were told this - consequently we had to sleep in the lounge room. After asking for a refund for the nights accommodation - we were told it was not their policy - even after we explained the circumstance they still refused. To top it all off while we were trying to negotiate a refund the cleaners stole our clothes from the laundry as they used the same laundry to wash their uniforms and the bedlinen from the hostel! WOULD DEFINATELY NOT RECOMMEND - UNLESS YOU WANT PERMANENT SCARS!

Nice room, nice place, and nice staffs.
But, the shower room was separated with bathrooms only by curtain.
So we can't lock the shower room.

This was a very effective place to stay in a city that thrives on action. I like the location because it was near a Circulator bus stop and a major street so easy to use for all purposes.
The staff was very friendly and realistic but also adhered to the rules. The fellow guests were a delightful mix and even some who were in the "senior" category other than myself.
It's not fancy. It is cheap and clean. It is a hostel and it works extremely well.
