Very good 75%

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

This Ryokan is probably one of the most basic in all of Japan. Staff were friendly enough and helpful, allowing us to leave luggage whilst we went to Hakone proper the next day, but it is very, very rundown. There were cockroaches the size of mice...not for the faint hearted!

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

The location of the place is great cos it's right next to the Yumimoto Station. Before I went, I read about people's complaints on the stairs but i didn't think it matters. Until that day when I got there I've realized.. the stairs were quite hard to climb especially when you carry a luggage that's like more than 15kg... my friend and I had to take turn to carry each other's luggage all the way up cos it was alot of stairs to climb.
The hot spring wasn't too bad, but the place was a bit run down though. I guess if you are on budget then this is the place for you, but if you willing to pay more then definitely you can find somewhere better.
If you don't speak even the basic japanese then you will definitely have problems cos the service people there cannot speak any English. Fortunately my friend and I can speak some basic Japanese so we survived...

The place was very clean so I didn't mind it too much... the only thing i hated was the stairs, when we left, we coudlnt' carry all the luggages down so we had to ask the old uncle to help us... So if you prepare to stay at this place, make sure you are luggage-free.

BIG SHOCK BIG SHOCK BIG SHOCK when we got to this place. we had read reviews on travellerspoint.com that were bad- - LET ME CLEAR THIS UP:

1. there are only about 20 steps up to the reception and they're NOTHING to worry about - part of its attraction is that it is on a hill side, just up from the station, but still slightly secluded and quiet. You probably climb more steps in the train station on arrival!!! There is no obvious noise from trains (trust me,my girlfriend is a VERY light sleeper)In my opinion there is no better location in hakone.

2. They do speak a little bit of english, enough to get across any relevant information - for example, they explained to us the fact we (accidently) turned up a day early to our booking, and they still managed to accomodate us

3. the family and old man were all very polite, very warm and extremely welcoming (they even offer a home cooked dinner)...a great place to have your first 'ryoken' experience as they provide you with traditional japanses house gowns, green tea on arrival AND there are onsen.

Something that was missed by other reviews is that it seems to be THE ONLY choice for budget travellers in Hakone,so it is quite surprising how much you get for your money - and it is a good price.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

We stayed a night at this Ryokan, during out trip to Hakone. It is located conveniently, just outside the Hakone Yumoto station. There is a clear sign in English, so we did not have to ask anyone to find our way. The problem is that one needs to climb 85 steep steps to get tho the hotel. (not 20, as is mentioned during booking). So, their advice to avoid heavy luggage should be taken seriously. In the hotel, we had to walk on a plank and on a slightly slippery metal passage to get to the section where our room was located. Once we got to the room, it was great. The staff were co-operative. The laid out the futons for us. The Japanese gowns and the green tea kit added to the fun. The bathroom and toilet were clean and had soap, small towels, hot water etc. The beer can vending machine outside the room was also very convenient. Overall, it was good value for money, I would say. I will choose the same hotel if we visit Hakone again.

The onzen was nice -> a lot better than i thought
it would be. The futon was clean and new.

the building is a little bit run down and air con is
a bit dirty.

Overall, I like it!!!
