This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Definitely not a hotel but a good hostel. The service however, was pretty poor.

We called to clarify check-in times when we arrived in Vancouver as the confirmation e-mail said 9am...bit strange for any hotel/hostel, so thought we'd check to make sure. So call we did, at 8.45am. The phone was answered pretty quickly and we were told "call back at 9am". hmm, ok then.
Decided to just head over to the place as we weren't too far. The guy at the desk turned out to be the same one who answered the phone. He was very snappy from the get go and after checking us in said 'your room's not ready". Fine, it's early morning. Makes sense. We were just confused from the e-mail and thought we'd try. "So when should we come back?" "I don't know, it's very busy this morning. Maybe 3pm, maybe 4, maybe later" (Lot's of dismissive hand gestures) Meanwhile, he was also answering other guests very innocent, unoffensive, valid questions in a horrible patronising tone with the same dismissive gestures we were getting.
Not a good impression. So by this point i'm tired and pretty pissed off to be on the receiving end of this guys bad day. So no, i don't particularly want to pay for my room in full when i don't even know when i can get it! The guy is now seriously annoyed at us as we wont pay for the room until it's ready.
So we leave and come back around 4pm. The room is ready. We pay for it, he shows us the room. More rudeness and serious lack of social etiquette ensues. If we weren't so tired after many hours of travel i'd have just left and found another place to stay.
The rest of our stay went by without incident. Coincidentally we didn't see that particular member of staff in that time.
St Clair is in a really good location and as i said before, makes a decent hostel. It isn't a hotel like the name would suggest. If it wasn't for that one horrible member of staff, our stay would have been fine. Unfortunately we can't shake the experience from our minds and we would never stay there again.

A little poor, the guy on the front desk was rude and no questions were answered.
No towels and the rooms are highly dated.

We stayed here 3 nights. Loved the ship decor they've got going on!

The shower rooms were a little dingy and cold, ditto the toilets on each floor - in busy season you could be queuing for quite a while I think.

A better kitchen facility would've been handy as it was in teh corridor only on the second-floor and was a squeeze to get past others.

Likewise, the tv room is ancient and seats are uncomfortable.

So, I guess, not really a communal place to meet people, but absolutely fine if you just want somewhere in the middle of town to crash. And it's cheap, which is always important!

You'll get what you pay for so don't expect a 5 star hotel.
It's clean and all the sights downtown ate on walking distance.

We enjoyd our stay there and I would recommend it if you like to keep things simple.

Excellent location, helpful staff and very good value. Nice and quiet for the mature budget traveller, unlike the average hostel! A couple of minor things would have been nice - like bedside lamps and wash basins near the toilets. The only basin available was in our room. Also the cutlery and crockery was limited and basic - but the fridges were large and clean. the microwaves worked well and the internet stations cheap. If you want an affordable, safe central stay in Vancouver, you should really consider the St Clair.

Stayed one night on for an interview the next day. The hallways and reception area had a lovely charm with pictures of old ships, nice architectural features and friendly front desk person. My room was simple but clean and functional and an absolute steal - $44 single (although this was last year - summer 2007.)
TV room is a bit of a stretch - tiny room (about 10ft x 6ft) with a 14" tv high up on the wall and hard, narrow wooden benches around the edge. Certainly not comfortable or relaxing. I took advantage of the free library instead and curled up in bed with a book.
Only quibble was that my room was right next door to the shared bathrooms & laundry facilities. This had the convenience of me knowing when there was a bathroom free, as due to the wooden floors and heavy doors I heard every single person coming and going. The laundry facilities are closed after 10pm (I think,) so that wasn't a problem but the bathrooms were busy until around 1am and from around 6am - so I didn't get much sleep.
I'd definitely stay again, just request a room not directly next door to the bathrooms.
