Hostal Marsella

My stay at the Hostal Marsella simply could not have been better. I came in near midnight on a late flight and the owner graciously waited up for me and got me settled. My room and the hostel in general were immaculately clean.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Having looked through the other reviews it seems our stay may well have been the exception rather than the rule but this is definitely not somewhere I would stay again.

The main member of staff who seemed to be running the place was very helpful and efficient but was let down by one of the male assistants who openly stared at both my girlfriend and I in a frankly menacing manner without speaking a word or even acknowledging us in any other way. At one point I became so uncomfortable with this I turned away and he moved back in front of me to continue staring. I can only describe this as creepy.

The room was small and the bathroom had not been cleaned leaving the detritus of the previous guests in the shower. The room wasn't cleaned during our stay meaning the bathroom bin wasn't emptied at all. There was no desk in the room as stated.

The views and location were good and the bedding was clean and as others have said we arrived on a late flight and were promptly let in and shown to our rooms.

All in all you can stay in better places in Quito for the price.

My stay at the Hostal Marsella simply could not have been better. I came in near midnight on a late flight and the owner graciously waited up for me and got me settled. My room and the hostel in general were immaculately clean. The room was spacious, stylish, and had an amazing view of the mountains. I was surprised at how tasty and affordable the breakfast service was, with a yummy yogurt and granola bowl with fresh fruit, bread and marmalade, scrambled eggs, super tasty coffee and juice for only $2 or 3.

The owner and all the employees were always available to try to understand my broken Spanish and answer all my questions about transportation, site-seeing, safety and tracking down my delayed baggage.

One of the employees must open the front door for anyone who enters or leaves, which was a little much sometimes, but they were always around to do so and it made me feel really safe.

The absolute best part of this hostel is the roof, with two hammocks, flowers, and gorgeous views.

Will definitely be back to stay again!

Nice family owned place. Staff helped out in anything and even more. There is not really anything negative to say about the place.

We stayed there for all together 8 nights in a double room with bathroom. The rooms are simple but always clean and tidy. The Hostel has a 24 hours closing service meaning the outside door is always locked unless you ring the bell and one of the members of staff opens it for you. This makes one feel quite secure. The staff is always friendly and especially the boss is really helpful. He asked us about our plans and tried to help with suggestions and always talked us through the difficult bus-system in and around Quito whenever we wanted to go somewhere. It is helpful if you can speak at least a few words of Spanisch but even with English you can try to communicate. We came at random times during the day during our 4 weeks stay in Ecuador to the Hostel asking for a room and even without a reservation they always had a room or just prepared one answering to our needs. Especially nice was that the Hostel has a locked room where we could leave stuff for a couple of days which we didn't need on our journey and knew that it was secure there. The area around the Hostel is quite nice you can easily walk into the old and new parts of the town and very close is a park where it is really nice to stay during the day. It is also not as loud as it would be like when staying in a Hostel in the Mariscal. The breakfast is good as well with fresh fruit juice, bread, eggs, tea/ coffee and if you like a great fruit salad. If I would stay in Quito again I would go back to that Hostel.

Very nice stay at Hostal Marsella. The people are extremely friendly and hard-working. It's the cleanest hostal I've been to in Ecuador. It's good to speak some Spanish before getting here. They are also very helpful, giving information about other cities, transportation systems, bus terminals, and other bits of general advice.

Very good hostal to stay in Quito for a good price!
Very central and ideal to get to old and new town and also to the main bus lines. Very friendly and helpful staff (!), although its an advantage if you speak espanol. Good breakfast is available and also beer and other drinks in the house. ;)
Good price performance ratio. :)

Perfectly enough for the price. Clean and wonderful attention. Near than the most important places (not to much, but ok)
The directions we received to visit the important places was great.
My only observation is the mattress. It was extremely hard. I woke up with a backache.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

First off, I´m a 51 year old male, who took spanish in junior high school. Ecuador is a Spanish only kinda country. If it hadn´t been for the proprietors at this Hostel, I would have have a most difficult time. Also I arrived with a disaster in hand. I had left my wallet in the taxi (I don´t want to talk about it!)

Estuardo, the proprietor, was there to assist me from the beginning. I can´t tell you how much he helped me, not only with my cash issue, my intreped spanish, etc, but also made me feel as comfortable as if I was staying at family´s house.

I had made reservations for a single / shared bath, but I was placed into a large room with two beds which I was the only occupant. My bed had a window that was to the left of my head, so I fell asleep at night gazing at the southern sky and breezes through the window.

Estuardo went overboard to help ensure I had proper directions to anywhere I needed to go, he and his staff always gave 110%, which made my stay a wonderful and welcoming experience. All this for $6.00 a day.

I ate breakfast at the hostel every morning, which I selected a fruit bowl, coffee, toast ($2.00) and they soon learned to have a Pilsener Brewskie when I arrived back in the evening.

I can´t say enough about how gracious the owners and their help are. It makes the difference between a Great Stay and a Mediocre Stay.

I highly recommend this Hostel. It´s in a great location with transit facilities very close. You can easily get to wherever you wish very easy, especially with Estuardo there to give you guidence.

Again, I rate this place 110% given the "Beyond the Call of Duty" philosophy with which they run their business.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

This hostal is a perfect location for the price ($10). I picked this hostal because I wanted to be walking distance from the churches/plazas. On arrival, I was warmly greeted with a map and directions on where to catch buses or taxis. There were also people to help carry my luggage to and from my room. Only spanish speaking in this hostal - although there is a lady who speaks a little english.

I stayed in a one bedroom with private bathroom. There wasn't toilet paper, towels, or soap in the room however I later found out that I was suppose to ask for them (thank god I had my own!). I found the room very clean and safe. It was equipped with a tv as well - only spanish speaking stations.

They charge you at the end - even if you ate breakfast/lunch/dinner during your stay. I thought the lunch was a little pricey compared to other places to eat outside ($3.50). Breakfast is either $2 or $3. After walking around town, I found cheaper prices for breakfast. If I had to do it again, I'd probably walk somewhere for the food to pay less.

All and all, I think what made this a pleasant stay is that the people running the place are really nice and helpful, there were clean rooms, and it was walking distance from the Basilica and other touristy stuff.

Also, if I had to do this again, I'd probably book through calling because there was a booking fee ($2) when I did the reservations online.
