It's my pleasure to write a review for this little gem of a property. I chose A9 Place for its location awa y from the hustle and bustle in the heart of Chiang Mai. Pleasantly surprising, you get the best of both worlds from this location. You're far enough away from the action to relax and no more than 15 minutes ride by tuk-tuk to the heart of the action.
A9 Place's lobby is based upon an open living concept which is quite typical in areas that experience tropical wheather. It is no different than Hawaii in that respect. The upside to this is that you get a chance to acclimate to local area tempreature. The downside is, you don't really get a chance to enjoy the quaint surroundings from the lobby because you will spend a great deal of your time swatting & being bitten by mosquitos and bugs. The hallways are open concept style too but the bonus is, Chiang Mai tempreatures cool down considerably at night compared to Bangkok & most of Thailand.
The staff at A9 Place are genuinely hospitable and humble from the owner on down to the line employees. Everyone speaks very good English and is more than capable of assisting you with whatever your needs may be. The rooms at A9 Place house very basic but modern appeal if you are not too keen on all the bells and whistles. It is certainly much better than your average budget friendly motel in Thailand. The beds are extremely comfy and the rooms are very quite around you. Maybe this has something to do with walls being made from concrete instead of dry wall like in USA? Note that your sink, toilet, and shower are all grouped together in traditional Thai style.
For an expat retirement town, there sure is a hell of a lot to do from local excursions, self guided tours, bars, and expat communities. There is something for everyone and it is SO CHEAP compared to America. I suggest going to Saturday & Sunday markets if you're looking for a taste of authentic Thai food and shopping without the attached tourist price tags. If you're really looking to stretch your dollar or just don't want to keep getting hammered with tourist prices, any of the restaurants up & down that strip of the hotel are locals prices. If you're really feeling adventurous, go ahead and take your chances on the side streets in the neighborhood, you'll find some great local specials.
In summary, were I to return here again or do a long term stay in Chiang Mai for me, A9 Place would be the first ones I'd dial. On that note, there are no phones in the room which in my opinion makes for a brilliant get away. They are on the same street as the biggest hospital in Chiang Mai, near the technical college, and all local area attractions.. Hope this helps.. Cheers-

Family of 4 using 2 fan-cooled rooms. Location is out beyond the Lanna hospital to the north of the city, so you do need to catch transport to the centre. This is usually less than 80 baht, and all 4 of us can get on a tuk-tuk. Reception can always call taxi/tuk-tuk/songthaew and they know reliable drivers who don't seem to pay kickbacks. For us the quiet location is a bonus not a problem. For others it may be a problem, hence I knocked off one star.
One superb evening restaurant 200 metres up the road, plus other eateries and the adjacent Granny's Kitchen, the owner of which rents off A9. Nice food, relatively limited menu but price OK, breakfast good.
A9 staff are helpful, the kitchen for use of guests is a decent amenity. Drinks cabinet in reception useful, but beer in large bottles much cheaper in nearby shops!
Rooms cleaned daily, very thorough, nice beds, great 'feel' to the place. Restful area. Fridge was soon put into the room without after a request, none of that silly minibar stuff.
Can't speak too highly of this place, actually stayed longer than planned.
Do not be put off by suburb location, we think it is an advantage.
Booking direct was cheaper than, for instance, Agoda...I cancelled their booking and went direct for half the price. That may be a result of the current tourist perception of Thailand as dangerous (it isn't)...at time of writing there were always spare rooms.
Only 1 criticism - no tumble dryer! Laundry facility useful, but in the wet season it can take ages to dry clothes. Found dryer down a side street 200 metres away at an independent laundry.
Pleasant open reception area and small garden.
Fantastic place, comfortable and friendly.
