A MUST READ REVIEW For AAE BOURBON HOUSE HOSTEL

We travelled in New Orleans Jan. 08~14, 2012 and stayed here in their twin private room for 6 nights. One of the reasons we decided to book this hostel is that they provide on site bike rental service which they list on their profile in every booking websites as well as on their official website, http://aaebourbonhouse.com/. But, finally we realize they are cheating in providing the fake information. They give careless service with so many excuses and their only concern is business, business, and business. I’ll give my review and how I make my ratings below.

First, they cheat with providing fake information.
We offer Discounted Bike Rentals through Golden Triangle Bikes. All bikes are on location at the AAE Bourbon House Hostel
Bourbon Guest $19 a day
Other Hostel Guest $21 a day
2 or more bikes $17 per day
All Rates are for a 24 hour period
Information above is provided on their official website. Also they give the bike rental information listed in their regulation sheet on the door of each room. But actually, they don’t have even one bike for rent on site. Well, they have two. Both are BROKEN: one with its chain out of track and cannot be repaired; the other they said in the first time is with a flat tire, however, after “I” (yes, I did that because the staff who tried to do that doesn’t know how to do that---I don’t want to mention her name here because I can feel she did want to help in repairing the tire, but nothing else.) fixed the flat tire, we found the break of the bike also doesn’t work. They ridiculously waste my time after we tried two times for two days each to reserve bikes for our trip. I am a bike trip lover and already planed a whole day bike trip in New Orleans. I spent time and money taking flight to get there from NYC. They totally destroyed it. Can you imagine how a customer get into a situation like mine would feel?

Second, they give careless service with too many excuses.
When you are going to take a bike trip, you have to ask information for bike rental in advance for sure. Yes, we did. But please be advised: DON’T TRUST THEM if they tell you just come and ask for bikes when you are ready to go. Plus, DON’T EVEN TRUST THEM if they tell you they will reserve bikes for you in the second time, because they just don’t care your need, your trip, of course not even your feeling.
The situation we’ve encountered is the staff we asked to rent bike at the night before told us they don’t have two bikes for us, cause the bikes are not belonging to the hostel. When we tried to argue with him, he just said he understands, he apologizes, but the hostel cannot be blamed. Well, it’s the first time and everybody can make mistakes. I thought. And I still wanted my trip to be good. So I forgave and we made a reservation for two bikes for the day after (please notice, this is the same guy taking care of the reservation and he will be working there for the rest of the day)---even that would be a much colder day. Yes, we’ve checked the weather for our trip on that day already. In addition, we set our trip route and packed lunch already at the time we asked for bikes.
In the second morning, when my partner ask for the bikes in their office from a female staff, she just told us they only have two broken bikes waiting in their yard for us because the guy who took our reservation yesterday didn’t know the bikes are broken and some of the same excuses as the guy gave us the day before (she didn’t try to tell us the situation when she knew in the first time and they even didn’t try to repair it before we came). To make up their mistake, she can lend us a bike for free. And then what happened is the story I had described above. I repaired the bike without proper tools because she doesn’t know what kind of tools for a flat tire. And of course we didn’t get a free bike since the brake is broken too. Thanks to their careless service, we have to give up our bike trip because the weather would become too cold to bike after the day.
And then you should know how they take care of customers’ opinions. Since I don’t want to beg another careless apology, in the end of the day I posted my experience and opinion on their advice board where they encouraged us to post our opinion on our arrival. They took of my post as soon as they saw it and never come to me to discuss my advice. I tried to wait and nobody came, so I put another one to ask them to respect other people’s opinion on the board. Not only did they take that off, also the staff warned me in the kitchen saying that don’t waste time---they will remove any further posts as soon as possible. What I feel from this is they always try to pretend the other customers get 100% satisfactions of their service. Those positive posts I’ve seen on the board stayed there at least all over my staying time in the hostel, but I never know how many negative ones had been removed.
Unlike me, my partner sent them her opinion via email (maybe she can be satisfied with a sincere apology---even I didn’t see them sincere to me). Below is what she got in reply:

"I read the first line of your email and nothing else. Stop trying to communicate with me."

OH~~yes, this was the service we got from the AAE BOURBON HOUSE HOSTEL staffs.

Finally, their only concern is business, business, and business.
Don’t be so naïve of thinking if you don’t consider a bike trip that would be fine. This thought may get you into trouble because their only concern is business, business, and business. The reason I am saying this is based on an event I saw in the same morning I was fixing the bike.
In the morning, they are trying to kick a girl out ruthlessly just for their own good business. I and the girl have talked with each other every morning since the first morning of her staying, and even the morning I was dealing with my bike stuff. She booked a bed in a 6 mix dorm for 5 nights and this morning was her 3rd morning. After breakfast, she just knew she got into the situation only because the hostel tried to arrange a group of 6 people to stay in her 6 dorm room together. Through in the beginning they want her to move into a 4 female dorm, but the girl refused cause the space of the 4 female dorm is much smaller than the 6 dorm and can’t fit in her suitcase (she had traveled through at least 4 cities in the states at that time with her big suitcase.) When she was trying to find another place to stay, the hostel refunded her for the rest two nights and tried to kick her out real quick before she got a place to stay for the nights. They refused her to rebook a room in their hostel and even argued with themselves on how many hours she can leave her suitcase on the hall way after we mentioned taking the big luggage to find place would be very inconvenient for her.
I can’t appreciate that I didn’t get into this situation on my trip as I wondering how many young people travelling aboard had encountered in this condition and how many will get into in the future since the hosts only concern about their business. There is a possibility that everyone could get into this situation. Even Wes and Denver.

As for my rating, I shouldn't give any star for the service but... The facility: there is no microwavable container for food and only two broken bikes for display, not for rent even for lend. The location and cleanliness is ok. In the middle of every places means not a must visit place could be reach easily.

Below is an email reply to their customer from the staff in AAE Bourbon House New Orleans....

Hi

We are your guests staying in your hostel from 1/8-1/14 in No.2 room. We felt really sorry and badly about your careless service on bike rental and your arrogant attitude of dealing with it. We did ask your staff about bike rental before the day we planned our bike trip. But next morning, when we ready to rent it, there was no bike at all for renting. If your bike rental needs us to make reservation in advance, you should mention it beforehand or mention it on your website rather than just giving a careless, harrow promise. We are so naïve and just arranged our bike trip according to the information you provide. We even checked the weather, the route, schedule of ferry, do every preparation, but in the end, you said there was no bike at all for rent on the day. Isn’t that totally ruining our plan and mood? Ok, then we delayed our bike trip and asked to make reservation for the following day. What waited us are only two broken bikes. Even your staff had known that we were going to rent them, he did not care anything about if bikes can work or not. Is this the service you provide to your customers? We delayed our bike trip again and again and even spent time fixing your bike. The weather also became too cold to allow riding bike outside. And what you did is just to give one and another excuse, saying that bikes do not belong to your hostels, so you are not supposed to be responsible for that. If so, how can you claim that your guests can rent bike from you on your website? Isn’t that cheat? Also, we post our notes, because we want to express our opinion, which you said you encourage your guests doing when we came in. How can you just allow good opinion and cover the negative one? And I don't see anything unrespectful to other guests since we just express our experience and opinions.

Your guests in room 2.

Very friendly place. This is what a youth hostel SHOULD be like!

Not perfect but you don't expect that from a youth hostel. All the main things were good...

Location: 5-10 mins walk to the tram into the main area of New Orleans which took another 5-10 mins and only costs $1.25. 5-10 mins walk to Wal-Mart for food/drink supplies.

Facilities: Free Wi-Fi and free access to an internet PC. Free pancakes for brekkie, free shuttle to/from train/bus station (cheers!). Plenty of bathrooms with good showers, pool table, common room with TV to chill out in, full kitchen etc etc.

Service: Staff were accommodating, friendly, chilled out, helpful, informative and NICE... just what you need.

Overall a fantastic place to stay for not very much money - would recommend to anyone and would definitely stay again.
