The Original Backpackers Hostel

Photos Facilities Map Streetview Reviews

As 'The Original' Hostel in Sydney, we pride ourselves on our great reputation, friendly staff and warm social atmosphere. Recommended by Lonely Planet, Let's Go and Rough Guide.

The Original Backpackers is a beautiful Victorian building that was converted into backpacker accommodation in 1980. At that time, there were Youth Hostels, but the term 'backpackers' was introduced by the original owners of the Original Backpackers. We reckon that makes us the very first backpackers in the world.

Reception and check in is available 24 hours. We have a beautiful sunny outdoor courtyard, a big modern kitchen with 2 ovens and food lockers, a theatre style TV room with cable TV and free DVDs, laundry with 2 new washers & dryers.

We offer free internet & WiFi (limits do apply).

Double, Twin & Single rooms available with & without private bathrooms, all with fridges, TVs & DVDS, fans in summer and heaters in winter.

Dorms for travellers aged 18-35 range from 4 bed to a maximum of 10 beds, all dorms have fridges, fans in summer and heaters in winter.

Over the Christmas and New Year period there will be a 10 night minimum night stay, from 23rd December 2014 to 2nd January 2015 there will be non refundable deposit of 50% charged on 1st December.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

The staff is friendly and helpful. I and my friends stayed for 2 nights in private room for three persons. The first night was quite good, but the second night was very bad because there were two men opened into my room. The private room didn't have the bolt door inside, just only have a key to open the door. Then someone who have a key can open into the room. I think the private room should have the bolt for security. I had complained that event to a staff when I checked out.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

The hostel staff were very friendly and helpful with our stay and with additional information about the area. The room was clean and comfortable but it did not have air conditioning which made the room a little hot. The kitchen and eating area were nice and there was a good atmosphere. I would recommend it as a place to stay in Sydney.
