Kangaru-Stop generally liked, although in our age, old hippies, but rather as something exotic. Given this format, I can recommend to my daughter.

The hostel is located on a very quiet side road and has it's own parking lot.
Whether in the main building or the hundred year old Villa - everybody will find a little corner here:

My, wife, 14 yo daughter and I stayed in the "family" 2 bd room. It was terrific! Everything was clean, the staff was very helpful and the other guests were interesting and fun to chat with. We would highly recommend to everyone fro young backpacker to 40 something parents with a kid (like us!).

This hostel rocks! Great place with a cool and spacious kitchen, clean, great lounge, free internet, friendly staff and best of all - cool atmosphere and great interior design.
They are not in the old town, but since almost all hostels in Dresden are clustered around Neustadt train station this is no big draw back. As a matter of fact they are very close to Dresden-Neustadt train station, thus being more conveniently located than others. If you stay around Neustadt train station you'll have easy access to Saxon Switzerland and to most of the trains to Prague.
Short, the Kangaroo stop is my new favourite hostel.
