Budget Accommodation Europe Croatia Hvar Hostels Villa Skansi
Overall it was great!!! Julia is a very nice Host, the place is clean, a great terrace. I only think it needs a indoor "Living Room", like the terrace. I was there in a night that rained and the only place to be was the kitchen. To the Hostel lovers, this is the place to stay!!!

Julia the owner picked us up from the bus and was really accommodating, giving us a lift back to the Hostel. Upon arrival we were checked in pretty painlessly, although there was a little confusion as to who was going in what bed, but that's hostel life!
To honest, I wouldn't go back to this Hostel again....There are a few things that stand out:
The dorm bathrooms were filthy dirty, the rooms were tight and cramped and it was all just a bit.... "un-finished". I appreciate they're under a bit of reservation, but it was all a bit slap-dash (one night the bathroom handle came off in my hand and fell onto my foot!)
The kitchen was well equipped, but again, it was pretty dirty...
On the day we checked out, there was no-one on reception, so no-where to leave my key (or get back my couple of bits of washing....)
Overall - If you're a little bit older (I'm only a young 29 and I felt old!) and you're just chilling out with a bit of island hopping, then I'd avoid this place and look for somewhere else on Hvar. I'm sure you'll find a MUCH nicer place for even cheaper....
BUT - if you're looking for a party hostel that's quite young and noisy, then this is the place for you.

We stayed for 11 nights in Villa Skansi. Matko & Julia were great hosts, ever-so friendly and helpful, but sometimes a bit hard to find. We had the cheapest room, but it was still good, with a small private balcony. There was no A/C, but the fan brought enough refreshment during the night. The only minor point was that our bed was a bit small for us (two long Dutchies) and it creaked. When we told the owners they made plans to replace it after we left.
The shared bathrooms were clean and the showers had adequate water-pressure. Rooms were cleaned once a week and clean towels or bedsheets were given upon request.
The hostel had a large sundeck/balcony with large tables and a small bar, where Julia and Matko served drinks and good cocktails. Once every so often they organise a superb dinner with grilled fish, -squid, and -chicken, and delicious salad. It all tasted great. Matko used to own his own restaurant and cocktailbar, and he put his skills to good use preparing all the food and drinks.
You can also rent nice scooters at the place for a reasonable price, which is a superb way to explore the island of Hvar. The hostel itself is located at walking distance from a small pebble beach on the way to Hvar-town, where there is also a nice restaurant and a terrace.

We were three people, one adult and two boys (16 and 13 years old). We liked Villa Skansi in many aspects, but unfortunately we got the only room without a balcony, and the only room (I think) without aircondition. It was extremely hot and the room was not very pleasant. I believe all the other rooms were a lot better.
I think Villa Skansi must be a great place for young people who stay 2-3 nights. My impression is that young people enjoyed their stay at Villa Skansi, and liked the possibility to socialize on the pleaseant terrace together with other visitors.
I also must make a comment upon the kitchen. It was dark and dirty. It was definately not a place that motivated me to cook!
Julia and her husband were both helpful an pleasant. And I am sure most visitors have great memories from their stay at Villa Skansi.

Excellent value in a great location. The owners were extremely helpful and most hospitable.

really clean rooms, the most friendly land lady i've ever had, clean sheets and towels provided. We stayed in a four person room with it's own kitchen. It it only had a couple of dodgy hobs but the fridge was massive and it had all the necessary utensils (except a kettle - although i'm sure julia would have provided one)
V. close to the harbou - maybe 3-4 mins from the the ferry stop and 6-7 from the restaurants of the main square.
They also have their own bar at the hostel, pretty much the cheapest on the island.

Villa Skansi was nice - we had two beautiful rooms with balconies overlooking the town below and the ocean - the terraces were big too! One room didn't have a fan and both were a little stuffy at night (even with the balcony windows open) but that is going to be anywhere. The problem I had (which probably isn't their fault) is that I had to leave the balcony doors open to try to cool off at night but was invaded by mosquitos all night.
The hosts were very smiley and friendly but I couldn't find them when I needed to ask a question.
There are a ton of places on this island and surrounding Villa Skansi and I didn't check on prices of other places or look at their rooms but unless it is July or August I would say you don't need to book ahead - there were lots of open rooms in our place. If you get one of the cheaper rooms (ours were the nicest rooms at $50 each a night) you won't get a balcony or view at all.
