Awesome 85%

If you already have your Shanghai visit planned out and do not mind the quintessential local rock-hard bed, then The Phoenix is an ideal base-camp.

I arrived the first night to find my single room had:
a) a toilet seat that would not stand up by itself - a strange experience each time i sat down to use the facilities
b) half my towel was missing due to rips and tears
c) the pillow smelled like it had never been washed

Thankfully I was reassured by the great location - walking distance to People's Place, MOCA, The Bund, Yu Yuan Gardens. An average 30RMB trip to other places - Main Train Station, Taikang Road, Shanghai Zoo etc.

However, I was disappointed with the poor english and lack of information the staff were able to provide. The only place they could recommend to eat was the restaurant next door and they would not book a taxi. Additionally, the well-advertised 'fresh salads for breakfast' throughout the hostel were not available. Assuringly the staff did the best they could and were friendly.

Thankfully, the restaurant next door was cheap with delicious dumplings and lovely staff but you can only eat there so many times. The rooftop bar was a nice and quiet retreat from the chaos of the city streets but unfortunately did not have anywhere undercover to sit outside during my visit as they were busy doing renovations.

A few changes and this would be worth the money.

The Phoenix is a truly wonderful hostel; it's like a home from home. The rooftop bar is lovely, with a brilliant view of the City, and serves delicious breakfast food! The restaurant also serves yummy food. Everything is really reasonably priced, the location is perfect for the Metro and within easy walking distance of Nanjing Road. The rooms are clean and tidy, and the beds are comfortable. I'd definitely stay there again- I'm missing it already!

Great hotel. Simple and fairly clean rooms, perfect location, and very helpful and friendly staff. Nice bar on the roof with a view. As long as you don't want posh, its a perfect hotel for budget travellers.

The Phoenix hostel is an awesome choice for sociable people who want a fairly low-budget room with the oppertunity of meeting like-minded people. I stayed with my boyfriend in a double room for a reasonable price, but the dorm rooms were a steal...and you have the option of doing your own thing or getting involved in the group activities and socialising on the roof top terrace which is open untill about 12-1am with cheap (for Shanghai prices) beer! Everynight we ended up meeting some cool people and heading out clubbing, playing drinking games or just chatting so in general the hostel had a really good vibe. As far as the hostel itself it was clean and central to all the best areas of Shanghai such as the French Concession, The Bund and The Old Town...you are never more than 4-5 stops away from where you want to go. There are communal computers, all of which have facebook, and wireless in rooms...oh, and the staff have excellent English. The only criticism I can give is that the wireless internet in the rooms was a bit slow and sometimes needed an ethernet cable, and the breakfast sandwiches were not the best...but that is just nit-picking really!!!

We spent a very good stay in the phoenix hotel. It's not far from subway to go anywhere in Shanghai. Crew is very helpful, so if you need any information, you can ask them without problem.
The bar at the fifth floor is very friendly, and it's a quiet place to take some good time. Restaurant is also a good place to take lunch or dinner.
We recommend this place to all travellers and backpackers research a place cheap and well situated in center of Shanghai.
