Ryokan Sanki is located in the historical district of Kyoto called Shimabara. Shimabara is an old entertainment district near Nishihonganji temple in the southwest part of downtown Kyoto. It is also conveniently close to JR Kyoto station.

The establishment of Sanki Inn is more than 100 years old and is built in a purely traditional Kyoto style. We share the same unique neighborhood with historical landmarks such as Sumiya (a National Historical Property), Wachigaiya, and Daimon. They were all built in the Edo Period (between 17th and 19th century). If you are lucky, you might come across a procession of a gorgeous Tayu (courtesan) and her attendants on the street reflecting images of the past.

We would be happy to serve you in this historical environment, and invite you to savor the atmosphere of old Kyoto.

Ryokan Sanki was our first accomodation in Japan, and the best so far.
We are a family of five italians, with three 25 to 30 years old daughters.
We booked before by email, writing in english and copying the Google translator for the same in japanese too, as a courtesy to the lady of the Ryokan. The old lady who manages the Ryokan appreciated very much, and she did the same, she answered in japanese with google translation in english below.
She always answered very precisely and in time.
Communicating was never a problem even if she lady doesn't speak almost any english, she is simply a delightful person, asking help or informations is no worries at all.
The day before our arrival I sent a confirmation with all our flight details.
We arrived with a bus from Kansai International Airport in Kyoto station, and then we took a small local train to Tambaguchi station. At the station we just started to look at the map then a boy arrived and offered us to call the Ryokan for us with his own cell phone. In five minutes the lady arrived at the station to pick us - simply perfect.
When we arrived we couldn't believe how gracious it was. The entire building is made of wood and is like a japanese labyrinth. Very traditional and beautiful.
It is full of nice japanese decorations and has a small nice garden, but what's great is the atmosphere.
We had two rooms, one very big for 3 sisters and one smaller for the parents. On each room she already prepared the futon with a simple kimono to wear in the Ryokan, a tea set, towels and everything you may need for your staying.
The rooms were both traditional, perfect and clean, and one of them was very very big.
She also provided us maps and other useful papers in english and japanese both.
We payed in cash as we agree before, and we found it a good and right price (even cheap) for what we had - affordable and a good bargain for a quality staying.
The bathrooms are shared, but always clean. Shower is simple and asian style, but provided with what you need.
The location is good - not far from Kyoto station, which you can easily reach with buses and local trains, and allows you to easily take other transportations to any other interesting site of the city.
It is very easy to go around the city and it also has some interesting sites nearby. The area is peaceful, though is not very traditional (except in some very very nice spots) it gives anyway some kind of "little village" feeling; it may be worth to take some time to explore around.
Every day the lady cleaned and changed our blanketts and kimonos, everything seemed perfect and new. She was always very friendly and nice and she even gave us some little gifts when we left.
It was a very pleasant staying and a japanese experience that we will not forget.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Very old but a very comfortable ryokan. Maybe first impression is not so good, but it was a great experience and we dont regret it. After sleeping in a very small room in Tokyo, getting such a beautiful and big room was a blessing. The owner, sorry i forgot her name, is very kind and very nice. Ryokan is near to the station, about 5 minutes by walk. although the way is the first time a little tricky, but we found people who helped us to find it... and without english :)
Near to the ryokan there is a 7 eleven, open 24 hs. There you can get everything. From Kyoto central station take the JR line 32 or 33, it s just 1 station and you are there. I wish you a lot of fun in Kyoto, a wonderful city!!!

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

15.11.2009
I stayed for one week and was very satisfied.
It is really a traditional style of accomodation.
My room was made each day and about 4 by 3 metres. The toilets were clean but very small. Bathroom was clean and with shower and bathtub - each day filled with water of 43 degress C. Enough fresh towels but maybe a little word down. Ryokan Sanki is really near the subway and just one station from Kyoto Station - which is really excellent organized. For this price you get a value accomodation. Missed internet ;) - they could improve on this one if there is also a TV and water machine for making tea.
Didn't use laundry machine - ask if it is possible.
