I stayed at the guest house for two nights with my four year old son. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but we had a very nice and clean room upstairs with a balcony. The bathrooms were kept very clean as well. The internet worked well and the staff was extremely nice and helpful. We used this guest house as a base to see the volcano, as well as the Simon Bolivar Zoo, and the Kid's Museum. The area was safe to walk around, even at night. There were a few bums and lingering drunks around at night that didn't cause any problems. There was some road noise, but we slept well. The free breakfast consists of two pieces of toast with jam and coffee. They had a menu for breakfast that you could purchase for a cheap price. I would recommend that you print good directions to find the guest house. Maybe even print a map of the area from google earth for the taxi drivers. The staff wrote how to get back to the guest house in spanish for us to give to the taxi drivers. We had a very pleasant stay in San Jose.

the hotel is very clean and the staff are helpful - they arranged me a taxi in the morning very promptly. the location is quiet but also a little further away from the main part of downtown so a little extra walk to there.
i think it's possible to get a better value for money accommodation in san jose but this was fine. the bathroom facilities were nice and clean and the room is large! there's no TV in the room and this was a bonus for me.
