About Galileo Hostel

**WHO ARE WE?**- Over a year ago, two young travelers bought Galileo and have since transformed it into a fun & funky home for like minded backpackers. With a color palate that looks to have been picked out by Ray Charles himself, and everything from Christmas decorations to surfboards, and box monsters to wanted posters adorning the walls, this truly is one of the most unique hostel experiences in Costa Rica. Everyone on the staff (Galileans), including the owners (whacky) live onsite, so if you've got a question we're always around. Come let us welcome you into our lively and distinctive home!

We're only a 5 minute walk from a HUGE supermarket, morning fresh market, and tons of convenience stores.

'But, what if I need money?' We're one block away from three major banks with more just down the street.

'I'm hungry and I don't want to cook.' Check out our binder full of recommendations, we're walking distance to Costa Rican, American, Israeli, Lebanese, Argentinian, Brazilian, Japanese, Chinese and Mexican restaurants! (as well as everyone's favorite fast food joints!)

**WHAT DO I GET?**: I'm glad you asked! Come check in and check out. We've got an atmosphere that will help you forget you're in the middle of the city. After a day enjoying the markets & museums of San Jose, or just taking several backpackers and a soccer ball with you to the park next door, come back and relax in our bar with a cold beverage or take a HOT shower, park in a hammock, and catch up with mom and dad with free wi-fi. Just finished a good book? come check out our awesome book exchange(with new books in Hebrew, German, Dutch, Spanish, French, and yes, even Canadian). Not Sure where to head to next, we've got free maps and a multi national staff that's been all over the country and are more than happy to talk about it over a beer! Don't forget to check out our LIBRARY of guidebooks and Original Rugged Pineapple Trip Reports©, compiled by travelers just like you. We've got free luggage storage for however long you're going to be on your trip, so leave your surfboards, guitars, pets(no wait - we got a puppy that way, so please don't leave pets), big suitcases, small suitcases, little brothers... We'll store it for you for free!!!

Let's recap,

**HOW DO I GET THERE?**- No matter how you're getting to San Jose, getting to us is easy. From the airport by bus we're a straight shot and one block away from the La Sabana bus stop (ring the bell when you see Soda Tapia or HSBC bank), or a $20 taxi ride. From the International and Domestic bus terminals we're a few blocks walking or a $2 cab ride! And if you're skydiving in, we're the big red building with reggae tunes and people having a good time near the park.

**ATTN SPORTS FANS**: Galileo now has all your football (Panther fans) games every Sunday! We've also got all the baseball (Red Sox) and basketball (Celtics) games all season. And yes, for our brothers in arms up north, we ponied up for the NHL package as well. We're not really sure what all those guys with sticks are doing out there on the ice, but it looks really cold.... You're welcome. (we show all the games, but if you're pulling for one of the teams above you'll more than likely get a free shot if you wear your colors)

**FREE BOOZE?**- Speaking of free booze: First day in San Jose? Tell us about it and get a free welcome drink. Got a great joke that you've been riding for the last three weeks of your trip? Tell us and if we think it's funny, get a buck off your stay! Experienced with your hands? Coming from an interesting place? Bring a knicknack and get a free welcome drink! Are you an artist? Ask about our hanging door program!!!

We're an eclectic bunch with an even more eclectic home! We hope you'll join us and become a part of the ever growing Galileo family!

Meant to stay here for one day after hearing about it from some friends -- ended up staying for three because i was having so much fun! The owners and staff are incredibly helpful and pointed out a bunch of really fun things to do in and around san jose. They helped get me a good deal on white water rafting & were super helpful pointing out things to do in san jose.

The hostel is bright, fun, and well maintained. I would definitely recommend it and stay here again.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

The Hostel was recommended by our travel guide - but the owner had changed since the guide was written in 2007.
The new owners (young us-americans) were friendly and helpful, but the hostel did not at all have 'family atmosphere' or something the like.

My points for a low rating:
- The hostel is situated at a loud street crossing. Contrary to our reservation with travellers point we didn't get a room that is NOT looking on the street but were faced with enormous car/ truck noise and especially in the evening and morning hours
- Contrary to our reservation with travellers point we didn't get a room with a double bed but on with bunk beds. The room we got was so small that one of us always had to leave the room, if the wanted to do something
- the kitchen was equipped quite scarcely, the only gas stove did not work, so: no possibility to have tea in the morning after a horrible night...
- ok, there is a courtyard, but it is very small and serves as dogs toilet - sitting outside inmidst of walls
- bathroom etc. was ok
- supermarket quite near
- big park quite near also, if one manages to cross the streets without being run over
- internet available

Sorry, but I would not come back. And - for travellers point - what is the online reservation for, if the wishes I wrote per email are not respected? I would have liked to have an email saying that my wishes could not be fulfilled so that I would have had the possibility to change my destination before getting to San Jose.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

me and my husband stayed at galileo an
march 06,2010 for one night it was ugly,
stinks and it scare me to death. the pictures
don't actually show the reality of this small
hotel. the rooms are so small it was hard to
walk inside of it. the bathrooms are outside
in the hall and are full of trash, no soap to
wash your hands, nothing to drink but beers
and too noisy close to bus stops. don't go there
if you are planning to get a good night rest.
