One Step Independence Square Hostel, Kiev, Ukraine

Unfortunately this is not strictly for the one step hostel as when we eventually found it via the arrows etc written on the walls in marker pen, we were informed that the hostel was full and were ushered to another as yet un-named hostel overlooking independence square by the manager. This hostel was ideally situated over looking independence square but was still in the process of being refurbished, men working until 5am installing showers - the likes of which I've never seen before with a host of exposed electrical cables exposed, a washing machine later fitted via an extention cable from the ceiling!

The staff where helpful and the room was secure, so secure they even managed to lock us in the hostel one night! They worked hard to keep it clean though my friend returned home covered in flea bites from his second hand mattress. They managed to obtain tickets for a football match for us though did take $80 for tickets that had a face value of no more than $2, a rather excessive fixers fee I felt.

Worst of all on our last day they arranged a "taxi" for us to the airport at a reasonable cost, just slightly above that quoted in most guide books, we ended up with what appeared to be an unlicensed taxi and a particulary scary individual who careered around some of Kiev's less salubrious neighbourhoods whilst continually texting and shouting into three different mobile phones, as he spoke no english this made for a rather stressful transfer with us both fearing for our safety!

Not for the faint hearted!
