Fortaleza Guest House was the cheapest accommodation I could find in Old San Juan. At $40/night for a single room, it is a sad indictment of the level of prices in Old San Juan in general.
Anywhere else, I wouldn't pay more than $20/night for the quality of accommodation available here. The room was pretty dingy with suspect electrics powering a single fan and an overhead light (the last place in the world you'd want to wake up in with a hangover). The lock to the room worked, but wouldn't have needed much effort to force open and therefore I didn't feel very comfortable leaving any valuables in the room while I was out. There is no safe to store things like passports etc.. The general public are kept out of the guest house by the outside door- one of the two keys you're given at check in is for this, there is no curfew. The washroom facilities are basic, but adequate. The double bed I got in the not-deluxe single room was very basic. The Guest House doesn't have wi-fi, but if you sit out on the balcony looking down to Clle Fortaleza, you can pick up an unsecured signal from Douglas' Pub a few doors down.
The best things about the Guest House are the friendly staff (I speak enough Spanish to manage, don't know what it was like for English-only speakers) and the LOCATION(!), right in the middle of Old San Juan: everywhere of interest is <10min walk away. I checked in at 11pm which wasn't a problem.
You'll need the street address (303 Fortaleza) to find the place because the small yellow awning that says "Guest House" is quite easy to miss (especially late at night). The taxidriver that took me to the place didn't know of it.
