The Townhouse Hotel / Hostel Manila owned and operated by Bill and Lorna, after traveling the world in the 1970s and 80s after high school and university, stayed in guest houses, yeogwans, pensionnes, ryokans, campgrounds and native style beach huts then decided to start a family so in 1986, opened the doors of their 3 bedroom 2 bath Villa Carolina Townhouse unit #31 as a hobby to welcome world travelers on a budget.

After a few years by word of mouth among backpackers, starting with 5 Swedish young men they'd met in Hong Kong who were heading to the Philippines, being added to the Lonely Planet and Jens Peters travel guides eventually 3000 to 4000 travelers passed through each and every year since the early 1990s.

The Townhouse Hotel / Hostel Manila provides a basic simple unisex 6 bed fan cooled share bath dormitory at P200 / bedspace, 9 basic fan cooled, share bath private rooms for P400 / P500 / night / 1 or 2 persons + P150/ extra person, 8 fan cooled rooms with private bath / Cable TV / P600 / P700 / night /1 or 2 persons and 15 air-conditioned rooms with private bathroom, electric hot shower, Cable TV, P1000 /night / 1 or 2 persons P150 / extra person(s) After the European Union formed in 1993 for 10 years, the younger generation in Europe found it more difficult to save up for travels to Asia for more than 6 to 8 weeks so we welcomed more Filipino overseas workers, Filipino students, Balikbayans, Philippines' provincial business owners both foreigners and Filipinos and foreign expat retirees, all on low budgets in a safe, clean and friendly place to stay in Manila near all 4 Manila airports, NAIA 1, NAIA 2, NAIA 3 and NAIA 4. Now, after continuous improvements and expansion projects our guesthouse style hotel / hostel has evolved into 4 townhouse units with 26 unique bedrooms (no 2 rooms the same) in the main building of 4 attached Townhouse units, #30, #31, #32, #33 and 6 fan cooled budget rooms & 6 bed spaces in our 5th Townhouse unit # 11 a short 65 meter walk down Bayview Drive away from Roxas Blvd so more quiet.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to review. I totally disappointed with this hotel. The receptionist refused to accept the reservation and told me that they don't know who are you. the rates shown are TOTALLY different than you showed in your web. 10% paid by me was not for them according to the receptionist. Unfortunately the Boss of the Hotel was not in the hotel and no way to contact them. I told the Hotel reception that the Hotel has misled us (may be Travellerspoint also and vise versa) and so I wish to make a plaint to Manila Police as I was totally disappointed with my small TWO kids. At my arrival, I had no chance even to find another hotel to stay. I verbally informed the Hotel that I will make a severe compalin to the Consulate General of the Philippines in Sri Lanka - the Ambassidor (Colombo) regarding the unpleasent reception and misleading us with my kids, hoping to take an administartive sanctions against the so called Hotel. I rather compelled to claim damages from the TownHouse Hotel for their very unhuman behaviour. (Only one lady was listened to me, but she also helpless with the other reception girls whom even they cannot speak in English. In such situation, how can a foreign tourist can talk with them? They must be able to talk in E#nglish !!!)

They categorically denied your agency for the Hotel Reservation and no connection with you. This comment is not tallied with an email I received from the Hotel, before my departure from Sri Lanka. I REQUEST you to intervene with this matter and REQUEST to de-register them from your list of Hotels as it would lead disappointm, ent of many foriegn tourists in future and thereby you will loose your credibility. I told the Hotel that I am Lawyer and I will compell to take all kinds of Legal actions against them as well as againt you, the Travellerspoint as well.

I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO STAY FOR ANY PERSON. BY NOW, I HAVE NOTICED ALL OF MY FRIEND OFFICERS IN MY INSTITUTION, CENTRAL BANK OF SRI LANKA, NOT TO STAY IN THIS HOTEL. Hope to hear from you the action that you will take to compensate my pains I incurred in this connection. Thank you. This is a Trusted Review. Why?

It was a terrible one. My expectation was high because of what they have put on their website.

Anyway, my brother and I came in at 5 a.m. in the morning. No one at the reception. There was a man who opened the gate for us, but we didn't know whether he was staying there or a worker. He didn't say a word so I asked him where the people are at the reception. He told me to wait for a while. He disappeared and when he came back he has got someone(a lady in a house dress) with him. I showed the lady my confirmation number hoping that she'll check it on the computer, but she didn't instead she asked me questions about my reservation. Then, I paid the remaining balance of P1.080. She told me to wait because she will tidy up the room. After 20 minutes, she came down and told us to go up to our room. She gave us the key.

I went straight to the toilet. I was surprised to see that there was no door knob, only a string to pull the lock. I accidentally pushed hard the door and it was locked automatically. I can't get out anymore so I called my brother. He was trying to unlock the door by pulling the string but still he can't open the door. He called out for help and the man who opened the gate for us helped us. I was inside for 10 minutes. What an experience!!!

We were out the whole day and when we came back at night time we can't open the door of our room. We tried hard but still we have to call for help again.

The beddings are not impressive either. They are old and faded. The very thin blankets are curtains. The pillows are also very thin. No toiletries in the toilet not even tissue.

Electric cables are hanging out from the ceiling.

The staffs are not friendly. They are friendly with foreigners but not to filipinos, I wonder why? I paid cash! One more thing, they didn't issue me a receipt or do I have to ask for it?

The towhouse hotel should live to what they have written on their website.

It needs a lot of cleaning and maintenance.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Make sure that you have truly reserved a room because booking online is not a guarantee. it's easy to say that the room you reserved is not available due to renovation but good thing the receptionist seem to be nice though; so, we just agreed to get another new room. I guess, the owner should have fixed the matter and at least, tried to know the problem, but he didn't. Foreigner occupants were also friendly; one, in fact, talked to us while we were bored waiting in the lobby for quite a long time.
