About New Imperial Hotel

In Palestine, there are historical monuments that still stand today as a firm and solid filled within an air of grandeur as when they were built over 100 years ago. The buildings with their charming façade have a unique place in the history of Palestine. While they may not be particularly impressive today, they were witness to important and moving historical events and do still retain an air of past grandeur.

One of the oldest hotels in Palestine is the new imperial hotel which is attractively located in front of the Citadel as you enter the old city of Jerusalem from its northern jaffa gate. This is the one of the busiest entrances to the old city. The Arabic name for it is bab ell-khalil (Gate of the Friend) in reference to Abraham, forefather of both Jews and Arabs and the friend of god. The wall bears the inscription in Arabic: “there is no god but Allah and Abraham is the friend of Allah” from here entered Jerusalem the Moslem caliph Omar Ibn alkhattab after its capture in 638AD. Also from here in December 1917 entered general Allenby, commander of the British forces which captured Jerusalem during world war one heading a victory parade. In the area where you now find the new imperial hotel and beyond it, there were fields here wheat grew in the winter. In the summer, the empty fields became dumping grounds for carcasses of donkeys, camels and horses.

The Turkish authorities moved this “cemetery” outside the wall and the grand new hotel was built in its place in 1884. Travelers began to write of the new hotel with grand facilities inside Jaffa gate when it first opened. Its round arched windows are articulated with dentils beneath an archivolt high on pedestals on the roofs tailing sit fine” Grecian urns”. The building is built of a light red variation of Jerusalem stone. The Greek Orthodox Church owns the building.

When it was under construction there was discovered a pool of a light red Batsheba from the supposition that Uriahs wife was bathing here when seen by David. It is now cistern underneath the hotel. here also was discovered a part of second wall , Roman tiles of the Tenth Legion and part of the shaft of column bearing a votive inscription in honor of Augustan Legate, Marcus Julius Maximus, erected by the tenth legion. The column now forms a pedestal of a street lap; a bomb scalped it in 1948. In the late 1940s it became known as Morcos hotel.

Kaiser Wilhelm II stayed here when he visited Palestine in 1898. The wall between the gate and the citadel was torn down and the moat filled by the ottoman sultan abdel hamid II in order to permit the Kaiser and his suite to ride into the city. In the 1950s and 1960s it had an elegant ballroom in which many weddings were held sitting on the hotels balcony overlooking omar ibn al-khatab square on observes below an ever changing mosaic of people, images colors and sounds.

Its top offers an enchanting panoramic view of Jerusalem if one steps onto the hotels roof, he will se important sites such as mount Scopus, mount of olives mount Zio, dome of the rock the dome of the church of the holy sepulcher, Hebrew university, the bell tower of the church of the redeemer, king David hotel, the garden of king David citadel.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

This hotel is by far THEE best location in Jerusalem - right by the Jaffa Gate, near tourist information, near the start of most walking tours, within a few minutes walk of the tram (which takes you right to the new central bus station in 5 stops!), a post office is nearby and there are a lot of shops and small eateries nearby. I could not have asked for better. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The owner is a lovely man and has a rather ecclectic collection of old furniture, mirrors, ethnic costumes, etc. which are well worth the look - in every corner of the hotel!

It is cheap, it is basic but I had an ensuite bathroom, clean towels, a clean comfortable bed, lots of electrical plugs for hairdryers/computers/etc and there was a breakfast every morning. It is not a European breakfast - it is an Israeli breakfast with local bread, hummous, tahini, various vegetables, sheep's cheese, boiled eggs, etc. There was coffee and cereal and milk and one could make toast as well. It certainly filled me up every morning!

I would stay there again. More expensive/modern properties with all the amenities and Continental breakfasts are not within the old city walls - and staying in the old city is certainly the best way to experience Jerusalem!

Absolutely the best location. Unbelievably hot without air con and the electrical system does not handle a fan well. Breakfast was very unimpressive at best. Personnel at the front desk almost adequately helpful.

There is a one good thing in this hotel - its location (near Jaffa Gate in Old City).

I stayed there in single room, and it was awful - no air conditioning, the window partially broken and not closed, old cheap furniture and, the main, small red ants. Did you wanted authenticity - you received it!!

Hotel manager mr. Dajani - is very charmed and polite man, but other staff - sleepy and indifferent. Breakfast is awful.

For the price of 55 doll. per night - hmm, it's one of the cheapest hotels in Jerusalem, but if you want economy accomodation - better try to book IYHA hostel...

I staid twice in a week. The first night, it was a night mare because the 1st floor was bar and it was very noisy. I couldn't sleep. I asked another room, for the other nights. Owner gave me double room and it was very nice. The room were cleaner, the shower was bigger and cleaner.
I didn't know include breakfast, I didn't had breakfast. For the last day I found it include breakfast and I had it. It was nice breakfast!!
I think it is nice place to stay.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

An excellent experience. What a lovely hotel, I was only in Jerusalem for 4 days and could have easily spent an extra day looking at all the history, paper cuttings and decor of this great little hotel. The room was comfortable with plenty of TV channels and toilet paper!!! The staff were very helpful and multi-lingual
