For: location, friendly staff & guests, sheltered patio & small garden to sit in when had enough of Rio, use of kitchen and fridge, free wifi, good value.
Against: furnishings a bit tired eg broken toilet seat mountings, no plug in basin but clogged hair stopped water running away, ditto shower unfortunately, breakfast adequate but poor quality.
Overall: plusses outweigh minuses. Would recommend.

My booking on TravellersPoint was not received by the Guest House. Be careful and confirm on the phone. They speak English and the owner a little bit of French.
Overall a very nice place to stay, very charming. We had a good time. The neighboorhood is not close to a nice beach but it is typical and nice to have a walk around. It is however not advisable to go out at night for a walk, get a Taxi to go anywhere after the sunset.
Very good value for the money. We are a young couple and have been enchanted by the place.

The hostel is located in Santa Teresa, the arts and culture heart of Rio. A big old building with loads of character, high ceilings and a pretty garden. The staff are the best. They made me feel very welcome, and through them I got a sneak peek inside the local scene. Linen and facilities were clean, breakfast was good as was the security. Five minutes walk up the hill from the hostel you can be sipping good wine at a cool bar with poets and musicians, or five minutes down the hill you can be at the Gloria underground station. The staff were able to point me in the right direction for sight seeing and book me on tours. The cobblestone street is pedestrian access only, but you can get dropped by taxi at the bottom on Rua Santa Christina and walk up a few flights to the hostel. Like anywhere in Rio there are dodgy neighbourhoods not far away so be sure to check your planned walking route with the staff before heading out.

Wow, what a find!!
This is easiliest one of the best hostels we have ever stayed at (travelling for 18 months too!).
We were so lucky to find this by accident (also being one of the cheapest hostels!), the place was tranquil, beautiful, spacious and very clean. It had only been opened for 2 months when we got there and the place was a sheer delight to stay in. The staff were absolutely wonderful and so accomodating, we were there for 2010 Carnival and hanging round with them for the week we had the best time in Rio. Also, it is close to the best part of town - Santa Teresa, and really close to the metro for all the main attractions and beautiful beaches.
I kinda want to keep this place to myself as it is a real gem but anyone who stays here will certainly not be dissapointed and will have a fab time in Rio. We were really sad to leave and will most certainly be going back in the future.
All hostels should be like this!
