Getting there is extreme the roads are very bad on your first trip but as you get used to them they are not so bad. The place is well worth the journey ... we met lovely people who were also staying and the owner and staff were outstanding. All our needs were met and the place was very clean. The meals were great ... dinner was wonderful with everyone participating in a small way to prepare dinner. All food was vegan and fresh from the gardens on the property. We can not say enough about how well we liked our stay here ... (Kelly) owner was very helpful in helping us plan our outings and steering us in the proper direction for our future travels. Thank you one and all at Essence Arenal for making our time there very special. Enjoy!

We stayed in the hostel for 2 nights and it has been one of the greatest experiences so far. Nico and Kelly who own the place, make you feel like you are returning to your friends. And they make it happen so easily - kitchen is in the common room that everybody shares. People sit together at the common tables and hence get to know each other better really fast. And somehow Nico and Kelly are so open minded that you just relax in 2 minutes.
Also food... every night it is a fresh made different meal (the same for everyone but if you have special needs, they adapt easily) that you share with everyone and sometimes you even participate in the preparation of your own dessert. And every morning... The breakfast starts your day in a divine way....
On top of that - you wake up with a view to Arenal volcano and lake. And, of course, there is plenty activities in the area - from hiking the sleeping volcano, to kitesurfing, chilling in the hot springs and enjoying canopy tours.
I higly reccomend this place to everyone that wants to feel peaceful and happy.

Great atmosphere. It's a little bit off from downtown of La fortuna, but if you have a car, then it shouldn't bug you at all. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and I had the best pancakes ever at that place

Location Information
30 minutes from La Fortuna: 3 km after Tabacon Thermal Water, there's a police station on the right, take your left leaving the main road and pass the Arenal National Park, then turn left.
Alter the bridge turn right and within 3 km arrive to El Castillo village, take the left up to the Butterfly Farm, after 1 Km see Essence Arenal on the right side of the road.
We can arrange transfer from/to La Fortuna for $6/person with previous arrangement. Otherwise taxis charge around $25.
