Really nice owner. Very helpful even though she speaks no Engilsh. Large room. Walls are paper thin for noise. You wont sleep late. The map and description to her place is is very confusing because of one way streets and the names of the streets change in the middel of the same street. It would be much better if she printed a better and more accurate street map (with arrows of one way streets) to get to her B&B once your inside the town walls. It took us an hour to find her place because we didnt have a GPS.
I have been to Lucca twice now and the best advice I can give anyone is to go in May before the summer rush is on and the crowds swell.
On a warm sunny, spring day we climbed to the top of the tallest clock tower to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Tuscany hillsides, red terracotta roofs and the layout of the walled town far below us. We packed a bottel of wine, some cheese , bread, fresh prochuto ham, and cookies in my backpack for a great lunch, wonderful sun and a cooling breeze with only one other tourist to partake of the view.

La Gemma is managed by a lovely lady and is a wonderful old house with bags of character in a great location. (Mind you, Lucca isn't that large so any location is pretty convenient.)
Our room was huge with a double and a singe bed, a sofa, 3 or 4 armchairs and a wardrobe. The en-suite shower room was good with the water nice and hot. Everything was very clean and comfortable.
The breakfast was a self-serve continental breakfast taken in the main living room, and was perfectly adequate. The main room is adorned with an eclectic range of "stuff" from old postcards all over the kitchen door, pictures, old photos, maps, lamps, telephones etc. I guess it gives it "character".
Just around the corner are several restaurants of various types - enough to suit anyones wants and wallet and one of the city gates is nearby where you can catch buses and taxis.
All in all we were very happy with our two nights in this B&B and we would certainly go there again.
