"the world hotel" is an ideal place for budget traveller's (the cheapest in hanoi!)i spend 3 nights in there and enjoyed much. great location in the old quarter, being close to yummy food but not as hectic as some parts of hanoi. the breakfast included is very good for the price (baguette + omelette) and the staff are friendly and offer tea/coffee whenever you pass by reception. they were accomodating when we had to cancel one of the nights we had booked; let us check out late and leave our bags there for the evening. only downside was the room we had was on the third floor and was quite humid when it was wet.

We stayed here one night and I could not wait to get out.
We were taken to the top floor to a broken down dirty windowless room.
The plumbing was broken so when you washed your hands the water ran all over your feet. There was no hot water at the time.
The sheets looked unwashed and overall the room was dirty.
We had to go downstairs and ask them to put the air conditioner on for us.
As for location it's close to everything, but it's in a busy smelly lane with animals being butchered outside.
We arranged a tour with them but maybe because of communication difficulties there was some problem with payment and they didn't return us to our hotel as we thought.
At least I can congratulate Tom for his friendliness and serving us a splendid breakfast.

The guesthouse is centrally located and very cheap. I arrived after midnight and was welcomed with sincere smile. The guy at the reception was very friendly and helpful despite the fact that it was late at night and a bit cold near the reception desk. I felt as if he was either my brother or a best friend who was waiting for my visit for long He carried my heavy suitcase to the top floor where the room was located, showed me everything in the room. The room was small and very very basic, but the bedshits were clean and there was AC in the room - very important if you are in Hanoi in January. Bathroom - very very basic and not comfortable for taking shower. TV was working and I even found some evening news in English The breakfast in the morning consisted of coffe, baguete and fried egg. I guess, this is all you get when you pay slightly over 10$ for a single room at this guesthouse. If you would like to save money, stay in the center and do not care about the comform - you may consider this guesthouse. However, from my experience in Hanoi, if you pay some 15-20$ extra for a single room, you get much more comfort.

We had a great stay at Davids Guesthouse. The staf is wery helpful and smiling. We asked them if they could arrange at boattrip to Ha Long Bay, which they did in 2 min. Further more they found at nice place for us to stay in Hue, at the same price as them.
The bath facilites cut be better, but it works. So if you can live with that and the very frindly staf, this is a great place for all.
