Stayed here for 1 night before new years eve. Wanted to stay at the YHA originally but the single rooms were full and was referred to here instead. They had only the female dorm available and I was reluctant at first but stayed anyway.

Stayed here for 1 night before new years eve. Wanted to stay at the YHA originally but the single rooms were full and was referred to here instead. They had only the female dorm available and I was reluctant at first but stayed anyway. I'm very glad that I did tho, this hostel has a good location, very clean and everyone was really friendly. The female dorm was a bit on the small for 8 people but at the time when I was there there were only 2 of us. Anyway I really enjoyed my stay, the manager - Graham was really really nice and friendly. In fact the friendliest backpacker host Ive come across during my trip to New Zealand. Would definitely stay here again! oh and I'm not much of a party person so the smoke and alcohol free thing was definitely a plus point for me.
Bunk bed supported by wood board over mesh, thin mattress, thin duvet with hair on it. Showers/bathroom nice.
Ground rules laid down by manager, who then reneged on them, was intimidating, kicked one of our group in the leg (!!!) and said the f word more times than I care to remember! He yelled at our group before evicting a man who was sitting uninvolved in the whole scene. Was thoroughly shocked as he had seemed fairly reasonable when we got there, though a touch pedantic.
Nice facilities, needs to pick up on some facilities (eg. the beds) though others great.
Needs a new manager and it will be a lovely place.
Currently would certainly not recommend! As for a "home away from home" I would not put up with this rude behaviour at home!
