The Stray Possum Lodge is budget accommodation set in a native bush setting on Great Barrier Island.
The STRAY POSSUM LODGE has a variety of accommodation. Six and eight bunk dorm rooms, twin rooms, double rooms, as well as self-contained chalets which can accommodate up to six persons. These include bathroom and a kitchen. The lodge has available shared bathroom and shower facilities. A large community kitchen and dining area that is also a great place to meet and relax. Just ouside is a large sun deck to enjoy the day, or listen to the silence of the night.
Below the lodge and chalets which border the bush, is a large open grassed area that is perfect to set up your tent, with plenty of room left over to enjoy a game of volleyball or an impromptu touch rugby match.
On the other end of this natural bowl is the Restaurant and Bar. The local watering hole and meeting spot. You'll find travellers and locals alike, mingling and enjoying lots of outside seating which includes another large deck with a beautiful view looking down on the harbour.
Only four hours by boat - 30 minutes by air from Auckland and you can be in the ultimate wilderness escape that is Great Barrier Island. We have excellent accommodation that includes; dorm bunks, double or twin rooms and self-contained chalets, or if you bring your own tent and sleeping bag you can choose to camp out under the stars!
There are actually no Possums at all on Great Barrier which is one of the reasons for the unspoilt native trees and plants that are the main feature of the Island. The grounds are completely surrounded by native forest and you will spot several species of birds such as Kaka, Tui and native Pigeon. We have several short walks which include stunning views of the Coromandel Peninsula.
Restaurant & Licensed Bar serves up great food, it's a great place to meet after a day of activity and relive those events with your mates. The Lodge also has a large kitchen available as well for those who want to make their own meals. All the facilities to make your stay a memorable one.
For those who love peace and quiet; long white surf beaches and unspoilt native bush, Great Barrier Island is the destination.
Island life is a step back to self-sufficiency and experiencing GBI is a window into the way New Zealand used to be. Many people describe Great Barrier as a trip back in time; take a trip to this self-sufficient paradise, kick back and do your own thing.
You can sample locally grown organic produce, chutneys, jams and chilli sauces that will make your hair stand on end.
