I was a bit worried about staying in this place because I had read some very bad reviews about it after I had booked. But everything went fine for me. The lady who let me in had a reserved manner but was polite and friendly enough and explained everything that I wanted to know in detail.

Astley House is a comfortable fourteen minutes walk from the Minster & York city centre with many historic attractions.
This small, friendly, family-run establishment provides good value accommodation. All rooms have en-suite facilities, colour television & tea and coffee making facilities....and for a touch of luxury there is a good choice of four poster bedrooms.
Astley House also has a private car park situated at the rear with limited spaces.(alternative free parking available oppostite property)

RSSI was a bit worried about staying in this place because I had read some very bad reviews about it after I had booked. But everything went fine for me. The lady who let me in had a reserved manner but was polite and friendly enough and explained everything that I wanted to know in detail. She asked me to sign short form of contract which also said something about paying for any damage caused. Just to be on the safe side, I quickly checked everything in the room and reported a few minor bits of damage (such as some broken coat hooks on the door) back to her straight away so that we both had an understanding that they had nothing to do with me, and she thanked me for telling her about them.
To put my "star" rating into perspective, I usually travel on my own and am looking for cheap, quiet, clean rooms and I don't mind them being very much on the "no frills" end of the spectrum. The room was indeed quiet (third floor, away from the street side), small but not tiny, the bed was comfortable without being too soft, and much to my surprise I didn't bump my head even once on the sloping ceiling. Reading lamp, telly and everything in the ensuite bathroom was in working order. If the price had been higher I might want to squawk about the low shower pressure and the grainy telly reception but at this rate I'm not complaining.
There was even room service (bed was made and bin was cleaned) after the first night but not after the second.
Breakfast is not included.
The place is a brisk 20 mins walk away from the centre and it's also on a bus loop with buses appearing to be fairly frequent though I didn't actually use them. An alternative, quieter walking route into town is along the river but only in the day time because, as the lady at Astley House told me, there is lighting only along part of the way.
The one thing that I did seriously dislike was the cancellation policy which specifies that they'll charge the full price if one cancels 7 days or less before the arrival date. I was quite ill before I travelled and had not noticed this when I booked. I had in fact assumed that all places listed on Travellerspoint had a 24-hour cancellation policy. It is clear in Travellerspoint's smallprint that this is the case "unless stated otherwise above" but maybe it would be even clearer if Travellerspoint were to amend this to simply refer to "above" without even mentioning any 24-hour policy? For people like myself anyway who tend to read smallprint only diagonally across the page?...
All in all, I'd have no problems with booking a room at Astley House again.

Any property that doesn't have a 24-hour cancellation policy will usually state so in their information, or at least they will mention it in the booking confirmation that is sent after a booking is made.

Really good value in the basic attic room. Good friendlines and information from the host. Clean, comfortable, 15 min walk from city centre along the river.
