This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Nothing negative for me to pick on during my stay.
The only thing I could pick on is climbing of the stair to the room.
The inn owner is friendly, though with his limited command of english and he will try his best to help u.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Our host was extremely welcoming, giving us pamphlets (not only for this area, but nagano and the kiso valley - where he has a cousin!), taking us around his modern ryokan, driving us to the monkey park, giving us his phone no to ring when we wanted to come back but suggesting we walk the old town, which we did. The ryokan was clean and very comfortable, our room very spacious, the bathing and loo facilities very good too. His wife was lovely and directed us to a very good restaurant for dinner, where upon confirming we were staying at shimaya we were driven back there by the cook! Just as well really, as the footpath back up the hill was treacherously icy on the way down in semi-darkness, so what it was like on the way up we wouldn't care to think. japanese breakfast good, our host's wife driving us to the station as it was snowing, albeit lightly. Overall this ryokan is very good with fabulous host and hostess. We would recommend it to anyone, and also recommend the monkey park - but be sure to really rug-up in December !

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Lovely traditional Japanese accomodation. Owners are very `hands-on` with all guests so if you prefer to be left alone, maybe reconsider. Mr. `Shimaya` offers to drive you all around town to let you see the sights, including the famous snow monkey park. The ryokan is located close to the station and a short walk from town. Facilities are clean and the beds are amazing so don`t be afraid of the tatami mats! There is no common room and the entrance/ lobby are nothing to look at but the rooms are bright and have private balconies. Good place!
