Riad Bounaga

A really nice welcomimg Riad. It is close to the Medina but entrance is very off putting on approach due to construction works and narrow medina laneway. Once inside it was very traditional, old world and we liked that. It was very quiet inside the Riad from outside noise.

Location Information

We can now do airport pickup. You will need to send your flight details, and the service costs 100 dirham. Please let us know if you would like this service.

Marrakech Menara Airport is a 15 minute taxi drive, normal cost 150 - 200 Dirham. At busy times of day, especially evenings, taxis will not be able or willing to drive up to the house due to the number of pedestrians and the narrowness of the streets, but can get to within 5 minutes walk where there will be porters to help with luggage. The caretaker, Abdulmola, is able to meet flights or trains.

Also a bus will take you to Jmaa el Fna, from where the house is about 10 minutes walk. Take Derb Dabbachi from the other corner of the square, after 4 - 5 minutes walk take the first proper street to the left, Rue Ben Saleh, a couple of minutes down there you will come to a small square, Place Ben Saleh, cross the square with the pharmacy on your left, turn right, then immediately left and Derb Bounaga will be straight ahead. Or ask anyone in the square.

Great riad, close to the main square but right near the souks - every walk back to our accomodation we saw something new or interesting (although we did get lost quite a few times).

It's not luxury but it has everything you need - hot showers, good breakfast, a lovely terrace, amazingly quiet. If you're used to staying in basic accommodation or backpacking then you will be more than happy with this riad and enjoy spending the extra pennies on food or shopping etc.

The star of the show was Hitcham, the guy who runs the place. Really interesting to talk to and so hospitable!

When he picked us up from the airport he was on his scooter which caused us to panic. He put us on the bus and said he'd meet us in the main square. From there he walked us back, showing us landmarks on the way so we could get our bearings.

Second day and he showed us the map and answered our questions. At the end of a long day in the souks we found ourselves in the tanneries where three threatening men were trying to scare us into giving them an extortionate amount of money for a tour. One call to Hitcham and he sorted it out for us and even offered to come and pick us up again. It was nice to know that we had a native speaker to rely on if we needed to.

At the end of our stay we were due to go to the coast and the weather was freezing. Hitcham again offered to save the day again, finding us a taxi and negotiating the price (those who turn the meters on are very rare) and lend one of his coats to my boyfriend who hadn't brought one.

A true gent and a memorable stay. Highly recommended.

Great caretaker who gave us a lot of useful information as well as a deeper understanding of the city of Marrakesh. Great breakfast and great service. The rooms are simple but ok. The roof is really nice with a view of Marrakesh with the Atlas mountain on the horizon. For the price this place is perfect.
