Our Hostel has been best described by a previous guest as follows . . . .

'Set in the midst of the coffee and cake fuelled scene that is Collingwood, Collingwood Backpackers is typically laid back and easy going. Its staggering distance from the popular and vibrant Brunswick street, with copius bars, live music events and atmosphere galore. A short tram ride is all it takes before you are in the depths of Melbourne city centre with shops and bars galore. Collingwood Backpackers does not cater for the 'mad fer it' backpacker but prefers to detach itself from the lets get pissed and then puke everywhere scene, instead opting for a much more relaxed approach with most of its residents choosing to stay for a few weeks rather than a couple of nights, altogether making it feel more like a home from home. As such of course it doesn't have the clinical feeling of many of the other backpacker hostels and there are only nine bedrooms in total. It is well used, so don't come here expecting a palace, it is the environment, the location and the people that sell this hostel not how it looks, don't expect power showers and a bleached kitchen and you won't be disappointed.'

We have no bars, no nightly competitions, no activities that will cost you extra, however, there exists over one hundred local pubs, bars, clubs, cafes outside our door, we are close to everything that's Melbourne.

You are welcome to stay a few nights and try us out.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

A special property with special owner gave me a memorable piece of experience in Melbourne. It's not a luxurious one but it's warm and comfortable to reside. Happy to see it is getting better with cleanliness and facilities during the week I stayed. Keep it up, to be the No. 1 hostel!!

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Although I am only 21 I have had the chance to travel quite extensively across the world, yet Collingwood backpackers has been my first experience of staying in a hostel. I had tended to avoid backpacker places before now, having heard less than pleasant things about them and the wild guests they attract. After traveling 40 hours to get to Australia, me and my brother found ourselves lost in Collingwood and contacted the hostel. Paul, the owner, was kind enough to come and find us and take us there.

The area itself is amazing, full of great bars and coffee shops. It is not for the prim and precious, but rather for those who want something different and a bit weird. During the day you can find some of the best food in Melbourne here and at night it caters for a variety of musical tastes, whether it is dance hall to psychobilly. Collingwood is also home to some fantastic skate shops and record stores and is just off from Brunswick street, one of the best shopping streets in Australia. The locals themselves are some of the most pleasant people I have met and always make the effort to help you with anything you need.

The hostel itself is like no form of accommodation I have seen. It is full of charm and character, which is something that I have found absent in all of the places I have stayed in, both previously and afterward. From its eclectic collection of music and film posters to the eccentricity of its guests, this hostel provides a fantastic atmosphere. As a new and nervous traveler to Australia who is also traveling with a younger sibling, it is this that which I praise above all else. Here, everything is completely safe and everyone treats each other with respect. In response to the very few negative reviews you will read about this hostel I will say this, that more often than not these reviews will have been written by those who frequent five star hotels. Having stayed in many myself I can honestly say that if such quality as this was reflected in every hostel I stay in I would abandon the sterile rooms and snobby staff of five star hotels forever. Collingwood has truly become a home from home and I would recommend anyone to stay here.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOSTEL.

My partner and I arrived in Collingwood, Melboure direct from a 26 hour flight; tired but excited to begin our year away travelling around Australia.

I had book into Collingwood Accomodation Melbourne about 3 months in advance. My knowledge of the Collingwood area was vague and there I just chosen the place that was cheap but had decent reviews. We were meant to stay there for 3 days.

- The building is awful - inside and out. It has no appeal.
- The owner is not a nice person. He was rude. He claimed we had not booked correctly.
- He said he need 24 hours notice of our arrival. This was impossible due to our flight being 26 hours! But mainly, this was not on the booking confirmation, as he claimed. I had the booking confirmation printed to show him - this angered him.
- He called my partner a derogatory name, which upset her. I decided that we did not want to stay there so walked out. We had paid a deposit.
- Upset and confused as to what had just happened we walked around Melbourne unsure as to what to do next. We were new to Australia and exhausted. Out of nowhere the owner had followed us in his car. He was about 2 inches from my face demanding money for the fact that he was losing business. By this point my partner was very distressed so I threw $50 and screamed for him to leave.

This was our first experience in Australia. The owner knocked our confidence and tainted our views of Melbourne.
