About Elephant Backpacker Melbourne

Elephant Backpacker Melbourne is best described as cheep and cheerful offering basic clean beds in the middle of the city centre in the café, restaurant and night life area.

Elephantastic value is offered for beds on Levels 1 & 2. Sure it is like being in a giant call centre with your partition “walls” not reaching the ceiling. Yes, you hear EVERYTHING your neighbour is doing or saying so don’t come unless you bring ear plugs and enjoy getting close and personal with everyone on the floor! Our bathrooms and toilets on Levels 1 & 2 are old fashioned but scrubbed twice daily and occasionally you have to go to Level 3 to have a hot shower.

The communal kitchen, lounge and dining area is located in our basement or dungeon. Sort of like Hogwarts minus the house elves. A questionable variety of crockery, cutlery and pots and pans are provided for you to cook. But why bother when you are so close to great restaurants at affordable prices.

Take the elephator to the ivory tower on Level 3. Third floor has recently been refurbished and offers rooms with walls to the ceiling, ensuites in private rooms, separate unisex bathrooms and usual white dull clean walls.

In summary, we are not the most glamorous of hostels but do offer clean, basic and jumbo value for money beds in a second to none location. Our staff are helpful and friendly unless you get trunk on premises and then they throw you out.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

I stayed on the 2nd floor, 30 single rooms of hardboard pannelling, no ceilings, one emergency light switch and no power sockets. There was one desk with a chair, next to some sockets under an emergency light. There is a fairly large well lit area between the lift and door, with no facilities. Any attempt to connect an extension powwer cable is punishable with immediate eviction and no refund!!. Communal toilets and showers, hot water not always available, notice directing you to third floor showers, but you can't get in there because your e-card only allows access to 2nd floor, basement and ground floor. The basement area has washing / Drying machines, powder has to be bought from reception, the machines only take $1 coins. There are 2 large fridges, which are totally inadequate for the number of people they cram in. There are notices advising all food bags to be labelled, to prevent theft, that doesn't work I lost some food, the only time I used the fridges. At least the bedding is clean. So if you are happy to stay in a place where you can hear nearly every small noise from your 29 fellow floor users, pay through the nose for internet access, and enjoy minimalist facilities in your room and floor area, then this is the place for you

I booked out 10 minutes after I booked in.
No electrical sockets... they expect you to leave all your electrical appliances at the front desk to get charged... No way.
No ceilings... Noisy and no security.
Claustrofobic!!! I wanted a single room and it was more like a cubicle.
I wont go back and I cannot make a recomendation.

Excellently located in central Melbourne, especially for eateries on Degraves St and National Galleries.

Rooms were good value and clean, but not well lit and no electrical sockets, although reception gladly charge things up for you. Also, walls between rooms don't reach the ceilings so noise from other rooms is more audible.

Plenty of washers & driers but I thought they were exensive - $4 wash, $2 powder, $2 for 20 mins dry.

Overall it was quite fine for my needs

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

i had a wonderful 8 nights stay at Elephant Backpackers. I thought the service and cleanliness was great. The bathrooms were cleaned at least twice a day if not more.

The kitchen was also good. I did not use the kitchen except to make a cup of tea and generally I thought it was in very good order.

Noise was sometimes not so good when there was an inconsiderate occupant. In the 8 nights, there was one bad night with late night party goers returning at 2 am.

I highly recommend Elephant Backpacker for its price, value for the money and location could not be better.
