There are two hostels in Hong-ik Univ. area.
1. Hong-dae Pencil guesthouse

Even there is a TV at double & twin private rooms. Recommendable rooms for couple, family and friends with their own private room.(No living room)

Pencil Guesthouse and Hostel has been newly opened near the Hongik University area - which is the hottest spot in Seoul. For a long stay or a short stay, here is the perfect place. Clean and calm but very close to the busy cosmopolitan street.

-24 hour check in & check out. You can stay at the pencil Guesthouse even after you check out if you need to. (to accomodate flight times, etc)

I stayed in the 4 bed female dorm on the 1st floor. The hostel is more like a house that they converted into a hostel. which gives it a more homey feeling. Be warned that if you are a very light sleeper, enjoy peace and quiet and require more than 8 hours of beauty sleep, it may get quite rowdy at night depending on the crowd present at that time. Especially if you live downstairs like me, which is right next to the living room and kitchen. So any drunk conversations or "HAPPY HOURS" can be vividly heard from the room. Either join them or plug in your headphones to tune it out. hahah... overall, the owners were really awesome! they speak relatively good english and chinese. They are always more than willing to help you out. the hostel only has 2 bathrooms which may cause chaos in the mornings and evenings, since as many as 30 people can be living there. BUt if you don't mind waiting or just waking up slightly earlier to beat the "rush hour" then, this is not much of an issue. They provide towels, which are rather small but sufficient. The hostel has free wifi and the computers are on 24/7. They also have guitars if you are feeling bored and want to strum a few notes. The huge plasma screen TV is awesome, because they have tons of channels including korean channels and some channels that show NCIS, criminal minds etc. They also have this awesome subscription that allows you to watch the MVs of any korean group you like. I found out about this when i woke up early and the owner, DJ asked me which grp i liked (BIG BANG) which he then switched on a whole series of big bang mvs for me to watch. IN HD! haha. they provide free bread and eggs in the morning. just toast your bread and fry some eggs for a hearty breakfast before heading out. overall, for the price and location. pencil guesthouse is definitely getting a thumbs up from me. the atmosphere is nice and i would definitely go there again.

Service is top notch!!! DJ,his wife,Shim-se and the staff are all very warm and helpful!! Because of their vast experience in travelling industry, they offer very professional guide,tips on travelling in Korea - I even had a cycling guide along Han river for free! (bicycle rental free, first come first served).The hosts always did their best to help -I had lotsa funny requests :p hehe..
Location is very convenient, 3 minutes walk from Honggik University station, good base for exploring Hong dae area (best visited at night) and the Seoul city centre. Especially if you are arriving at the airport late at night because the A'rex train route covers Honggik university station.
Staying here is like home away from home. The facilities are comprehensive and the place is very clean. You will feel very comfortable from the warmth of the hosts. Occasionally they will have dinner together so it is also a good ground for experiencing the actual Korean culture. Overall, this is a very good accommodation! I will come stay here in my upcoming visits to Korea!
