Montevideo is the largest city, the capital, and the chief port of Uruguay. The settlement was established in 1726 by Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, as a strategic move amidst a Spanish-Portuguese dispute over the platine region, and as a counter to the Portuguese colony at Colonial Del Sacramento. According to the census of 2004, Montevideo has a population of 1,325,968 (about half of Uruguay's population). It has an area of 530 square kilometers (200 sq mi) and extends 20 kilometers (12 mi) from west to east. The southernmost cosmopolitan capital city in the Americas and third most southern in the world, it is situated in the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata (Spanish: "Silver River").

Montevideo has a rich architectural and cultural heritage, the latter including tango and candombe. According to Mercer Human Resource Consulting, in 2007 Montevideo provided the highest quality of life in Latin America.

This hostel is well located in the historic part of the city, close to the port. Taxi fom the bus station was about $8. No signage, just find the address and ring the bell! The building is well, old..... but under improvement by the owners, who are very friendly and super helpful. Don´t expect luxury here, but you can expect a clean hostel environment and a comfortable bed. Bathrooms have been renovated and are spotless, but water does not flow in great abundance or consistently. Don´t bother with the breakfast offered, or the kitchen, one would be far better off in one of the many vey affordable cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood. My one suggestion to Fransisco & Luis would be to offer strongboxes for money, passports etc, as the rooms are not very secure, and I found the entry door open a couple times.
