'The desired residence of the savvy backpacker... This hostel's clean, modern rooms have won it favourable reviews from all quarters.' (Lonely Planet)

This is our 1st Wombats, opened in 1999 by Sascha , Marcus and 5 staff members but it´s by no means "old": every single piece of furniture has been replaced at least once, all bathrooms got a complete renovation, the bar and breakfast room a major facelift and new common space has been added in the building next door.
Get to know the place from which the Wombats spirit set out for international fame, conquering travellers' hearts. The sun terrace is the big plus here a brilliant out-door zone during daytime, it turns into bar area in the evening!

PLEASE NOTE: The rates given on this site DO NOT INCLUDE BREAKFAST. An all-you-can-eat continental buffet brekkie costs EUR 3.50. You don´t need to 'reserve' breakfast, just come round to the reception in the morning if you are hungry.

The five reasons why Wombats City Hostels became a destination by their own right:
Best Cleanliness
Unfortunately not something to take for granted in many other hostels, but we do take this seriously: we have won the "Cleanest Hostel Worldwide" award. Twice.
Most Amenities
We are centrally located and close to the trains and public transport. All our rooms come with comfy wooden beds, private shower & toilet facilities and lockers for your belongings. You´ll get a free set of bedlinen, a free welcome drink, wifi for free use (in the lobby), a guest kitchen for free use and our self-made free city map with all essential information about the goings-on in town.
We offer an all-you-can-eat breakfast, our lively womBAR serves cheap drinks and food, internet terminals, laundromats, 24 hours reception service and of course no age limit, no curfew, no lockout and no stupid rules.
The Hostel from travellers for travellers
We have travelled the world ourselves so we know from first hand what you are doing and what you expect from us. We care for you and we care for your feedback.
Best social Atmosphere
We make sure that you will feel safe and welcome here. When you have been on the road all day long, seeing sights and walking and walking, it's cool to have a nice scene at the hostel where you can have some beers, talk and make friends. This will make your stay a memorable one! Many a traveller stayed quite a bit longer than primarily intended.
Wombats is not dirt cheap
You may find an even cheaper place to crash in town, but none where you get more value for your money.
We are looking forward to welcoming you !

PLEASE NOTE: no check-in before 2pm (we need to clean the rooms first!) You may leave your stuff with the reception though and come back later.

I stayed here with another Travellerspoint member during the 2008 European Cup. The place had a good vibe and the staff was friendly. There's a nice bar on the first floor and the food we had was good (limited menu but that's to be expected imo) and well priced. There was a voucher for a free small beer too which never hurts

Location was great for us coming in off the train from Zurich. About 5 minutes walk from the station. There's actually a sister hostel of this one right across from the same station, so make sure you know which one you are booked into (unlike us who didn't have the address or phone number with us...).
I'm giving it 5 stars for facilities as our 4-bed room had a bathroom in it and we got free sheets. Not sure if the bathroom in the room is the norm, but they are available if you need them. Accessible via wheelchair and includes a lift.
Overall I'd have no hesitation recommending it.
This place was terribly hard to find.
I was wandering around looking at my map from every possible angle.
Finally got there.
Very very busy, with friendly staff but i think the place is too big.
Dorms about average.
it did have a good vibe though.

From Westbahnhof
Take the exit "Gerstnerstraße", walk to Äußere Mariahilfer Straße and then turn right. Follow Mariahilfer Straße until no. 152 (corner Rosinagasse), turn right into Rosinagasse - Grangasse is the second street on the left.
From Südbahnhof
Take tram 18 to Westbahnhof. Left of the Westbahnhof train station is Äußere Mariahilfer Straße. Follow Mariahilfer Straße until no. 152 (corner Rosinagasse). Turn right into Rosinagasse - Grangasse is the second street on the left.
From Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof
Take tram 5 to Westbahnhof. Left of the Westbahnhof train station is Äußere Mariahilfer Straße. Follow Mariahilfer Straße until no. 152 (corner Rosinagasse). Turn right into Rosinagasse - Grangasse is the second street on the left.
From the Airport
Most convenient is the shuttle bus to Westbahnhof (6 , buy ticket from driver). The cheapest option is the S-Bahn to Wien Mitte and subway U3 to Westbahnhof from there (same ticket valid for both, 3.40 ). The 'City Airport Train' (CAT) is a few minutes faster than the S-Bahn, but costs 8 Euros - it also ends at Wien Mitte, from where you´ll have to catch the U3 underground to Westbahnhof. The CAT ticket is NOT valid for the U3!
Shuttle bus:
It will drop you off on the northern side of Westbahnhof (which is a huge construction site at the moment) - we are on the southern side of it, so you have to walk around it or right through it, that´s faster. Here is how: walk into the station, then past all the platforms all the way to platform 1 (always straight ahead), there are yellow arrows on the floor with "zur U-Bahn" and "zur Straßenbahn" written on them
that's the right way! Continue walking straight ahead, past platform 1 until you enter the provisional entrance hall of the Westbahnhof, down the escalators in front of you, once you've reach the bottom of the stairs turn right and take the exit "Gerstnerstraße" (you should be standing in front of a Chinese restaurant) turn left and walk down Gerstnerstraße until you hit the main street (Mariahilfer Straße) follow Mariahilfer Straße until no. 152 (corner Rosinagasse), turn right into Rosinagasse - Grangasse is the second street on the left.
S-Bahn or CAT and U3:
Get off the U3 at Westbahnhof, then take the exit "Äußere Mariahilfer Straße". Once up there, follow Mariahilfer Straße until no. 152 (corner Rosinagasse), turn right into Rosinagasse - Grangasse is the second street on the left.
