From $43

No imposing entrance or red carpet awaits you here. No clue on the outside that behind the centuries-old frontage on Oude Houtlei is an ancient cloister: PoortAckere. We are an oasis of peace, hidden away from the bustle of the city. Once inside you find yourself in a former nunnery whose history goes back to 1278. The building that turned its back on the world for so many centuries now reveals its secrets to a few favoured guests.

The atmosphere is serene and restful, as befits an age-old neo-gothic building. And yet PoortAckere retains its unique character, as a medieval cloister with its own history.

It is its domesticity that gives the building its charm.

In the 'Kapittelzaal', chapter house, looking on to the garden culinary delights await you. You can enjoy your breakfast buffet or a relaxed dinner served under the tracery of neo-gothic arches.

In the guest-house a feeling of peace, freedom and unconcern comes over you in the more austere neo-gothic part of the guesthouse.

There are simple, authentic convent cells with a washbasin and communal showers and toilets in the hall and there is a television in the double rooms.

Perhaps you will sleep in the St Cecilia room or the monastery cell where sister Philomena stayed for so many years.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Poort Ackere is an ideal spot if you want to visit Ghent. Close to the historic city centre, it is located in a quiet road. The historic builing itself is beautiful and full of charm and quietness itself. Cautiously renovated it is a place where you can relax and at the same time get the feeling of this historic space itself.
People at Poort Ackere are extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast is sufficient and healty and well presented. The rooms are simple but special. Washing facilities are clean and adequate.
You should not talk too loud, because your neighbour will hear every word.
And, at last, the price is unbeatable!

I can highly recommand Poort Ackere

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

Staying for a couple of days in a former monastery can be quite an experience :) All rooms have saints names and thereby gain some personality - it's a different story to stay in room 1.06 than in Saint Lucas' cell isn't it? My room was small and pretty dark, quite austere. But this appears to be just normal if you take it for a former monastery "slot". However there's everything you need in there, so no practical complaints. Also, if you don't plan to spend too much time inside, rather walk around the beautiful city and just go in for a good rest, this guesthouse is probably what you need. It's also not very expensive, particularly when compared to other hotels in Gent, allowing you to spend more on going out, which is quite a good deal in my opinion.

Some of the staff members were really nice and helpful though relaxed and easy-going, with a bright genuine smile on their faces, some others were a bit artificially nice.

A big plus for the design of the hotel's restaurant, looking like a monastery's church. God is a cook this time, not a dj :) Well the food itself wasn't that great, although it wasn't bad either. Simple, again, well fit to the general monastery atmosphere.

This is a Trusted Review. Why?

We were in the front house towards the road, little noisy. Parking is provided in the back but charged an extra 10 Euro per day.
Breakfast in a very nice restaurant but charged 15 Euro extra per person. We opted out.
Our room was quiet big with a fridge and mini kitchen, very clean but decorating will be necessary in the near future. Did not use the TV. Good info about Gent available in the room.
Friendly staff.
