We found Kikuyu Lodge to be a beautifully clean and well run guest house . We only stayed a few nights on our way through Nairobi but we were still made to feel part of the family . If you are looking for somewhere down to earth and non corporate we would be happy to recommend Kikuyu Lodge . We are looking forward to staying there again next time we are in Nairobi.

This "hotel" is a very long way from Nairobi, and can only be accessed by local bus, cheap but not for the faint hearted, or taxi, which proved to be very expensive. and once inside at night, it is impossible to venture outside .The owner is unable to accept payment by either debit or credit card, only cash , which proved an embarrasment.
While the food provided was adequate and the maid did her very best to make the stay comfortable, I thought that overall it was poor value for money, and could only recommend it as a jumping off point for Safaris.
Finally, although I paid a $90 dollar deposit, I was only credited with $78 and was told that it wasnt a deposit, but a nightly discount and as I was away for 2 nights it wasnt refundable. I didnt understand it then and still dont.
If I had know how far from the centre of town this was, I would not have booked it, and none of the tour operators in town had heard of it.

Travellerspoint Response

We are sorry to hear that you had a disappointing stay at the Kikuyu Lodge Hotel. In regards to the booking deposit, this is non-refundable, as is stated on Travellerspoint when you make a booking. Unfortunately this does mean that if you shorten your stay, you will lose that percentage of your deposit.

The homestead a bit far away from the city (about 15 mins taxi drive) but if you consider 2 taxi fares per day ($20 each) still is a value for money as it is relaxed and full serviced, clean and cosy. Maybe the hot water isn't as hot as supposed to be and Trevor is a bit introverted, but Hannah the maid , cook and everything else is a real treasure for everybody. Imre

Excellent starting point for a safari in Kenia. Family (51, 46, 17 year old), stayed there in January 2010.

Highly recommended! We will come back to Kikuyu Lodge if we travel to Nairobi. Very friendly atmosphere.

Hotel: very clean and worth the price. Do not expect a luxury hotel to spend the day - it is a good starting and end point for safaris. Some traffic noise. Full board was good and we had good times with other guests and the owner Trevor and his family.

Safari: Trevor organized our trip according to our wishes and budget. In our opinion there is no better way to do it with a reasonable budget. We had a 3 day safari to the Massai Mara - the car and the tour guide (Jimmy) were really first class! We were lucky to see the big five within less than 1 hour! Jimmy explained us many things about people and the country. Trevor will organize the accomodation in the Mara according to your wishes - depending on your budget. We decided for the low budget solution which worked out just fine (good tents with beds, restaurant was ok, showers and toilets good for 2 nights). Total cost, including airport transportation, camp, car, driver, park fees, ... was less than 1500 USD for all three of us.

The hotel is situated close to the main highway so traffic noise is a problem.
One is restricted to meals in house as there are no restaurants or bars nearby. However if travelling with your own transport it is ideally sited for access to the rift valley and norhern game parks. Trevor, the owner organises tailor made safaris to suite your needs.Security at the hotel could be a problem area.Nice garden for relaxing in.Taxi into Nairobi town would cost about 2000ksh one way.

If you want to avoid the real Kenya and stay in a coldly efficient Western-style hotel, this may not be for you. The hotel is in a poorer neighborhood, but the service is superb and personal and you will have a great time. The hotel is clean, comfortable and extremely well run. The staff are very friendly, welcoming and extremely professional, but the atmosphere is more like visiting family and friends than a hotel. If you ask, you can do all the tourist things like safaris and tours and they will provide excellent local guides. For the modest prices, this is excellent value for money and I would definitely go there again.

Charity and Trevor open their home to their guests providing a very warm, friendly and hospitable welcome. Kikuyu Lodge became our home whilst we were travelling in Kenya and Tanzania and it was always good to return there after several days away. It was relaxing and comfortable; the cooking was excellent, especially the African food, and our individual needs and requirements were catered for, including local transport and sightseeing. We would certainly return to Kikuyu Lodge and recommend it to friends.
