Melbourne House, Queenstown, Neuseeland

we had an unhappy time here.we stayed for 2 days then went to another town and stayed here for a day on the return.when we got there reception was closed (8pm) and there was a nasty letter telling us we had not payed for our first stay.i phoned the number i had been given and told the guy we paid in cash.he had tried to put through our credit card without our authorisation,but it was declined.he was insistant for another number.we were really upset and when we got to our room it was quite dusty so we went elsewhere.i emailed the hostel and they said they belatedly checked the cash register and we had indeed payed.i thought it very unprofessional.also we understood breakfat was included but it wasnt

All in all, for a Comfort Inn, I was very unimpressed with this hotel. It's certainly more than 400m away from the main town centre. More like 1.5km, and it's situated up a very, very, very steep hill, so would not suit any travellers with walking difficulties.... or aching limbs after a day's skiiing.

The rooms were overpriced for what they were. Very, very basic with 1970's fixtures and fittings. Half of the plug sockets didn't work, the shower looked as though it had been taken out of the 1960's, and the beds were very, very uncomfortable.

For $120 a night for a double room it certainly wasn't worth anywhere near the amount of money! In fact, the second night, we decided to get a double room at the YHA in the centre of town, and whils this wasn't the best YHA we'd stayed in, it was a vast improvement on the Melbourne House and only cost $60 !

We initially booked a single room and a double room as we were travelling with a friend, but on inspecting the single room, we decided that my dilapidated garden shed would have been more hospitable !

The single room was probably no bigger than a coffin and you couldn't fit down the side of the bed, even though it was pushed up against one wall ! How they have the cheek to charge $80 a night for this I have no idea !

The rooms were absolutely freezing and there was mould growing around the windows. On the whole, the hotel was clean, but then again, how difficult is it to wipe down 1970's melamine ? ?

Seriously quys, if you're thinking of staying here, don't ! There are much nicer places (cheaper too) where you can stay in Queenstown.

If they reduced their prices to reaonable rates, such as $30 for a single per night and say $50 for a double, then it wouldn't be too bad, but if I were the Managing Director of Comfort Inn, I'd seriously consider taking away the franchise until the place was refurbished !
