The Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel has it all. Location, friendly staff, comfortable beds, affordable prices, an international and lively atmosphere and did I mention a superb location. Situated in a 18th century building in the heart of the historic Old Town on Edinburgh's funkiest Street, our hostel is located 50 metres from the Royal Mile and less than 2 minute's walk from the Train station and airport shuttle bus. This means we're perfectly positioned in the middle of Edinburgh's many attractions and wild nightlife.
We have bright, clean and spacious dorm rooms and a few private rooms, which are located in our main building, and some have magnificent views down Cockburn Street or over the Edinburgh skyline. We also have a large number of other private rooms housed in self-catering apartments in two separate buildings on the same street. These tend to be a bit quieter and are quite popular with couples or small groups
The Hostel has a 24-hour reception and there is no curfew so you are free to explore the city until all hours in the morning. We also have a large self-catering kitchen, pool room, chill out room with Sky TV. If you don't feel like cooking there is café/bar attached to the Hostel called the Southern Cross Café. Come here for a relaxing drink, or to do some emailing on the Internet. We have an extensive menu and a wide range of drinks to offer. All Hostel guests also receive a 15% discount off their food bill.
Any guest under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult (over 21) and must not be in shared rooms.
Check-in time is from 1pm. Check out time is 10am.

Important notice for New-Year period 2009/2010:
We are offering a 4 night minimum stay from £50.00 per person per night. (£200.00+ pp for those 4 nights.) All prices are subject to change.
With all bookings Hostelworld will deduct 10% deposit - the remaining balance will be due 1 month before arrival. If you book after the 30th November the Hostel will require full payment when we receive the booking.
Over Hogmanay (New Year's) all cancellations must be made 14 days before your arrival date or you will be charged the full amount!
Any cancellations received less than 14 days prior to the date of arrival will not receive a refund, unless beds can be re-sold.

The location cannot be better. Although it is pretty dirty and the bathroom was on another level, I cannot complain about the atmosphere. The people that choose this place are nice and easy to talk to. If you are looking for a good time, meet new nice people, going out, great location and you don't care too much about the cleanliness this is the right place.

Perfect location but a bit noisy...
There shuld be a light system so that people who comes to the room at night doesn't need to open the lights...
and there could also be some notes to ask people not to make noice in common areas near the rooms at night...

I chose this hostel on the basis of location, I was joining some freinds for a weekend of beers in Edinburgh and as my wife and daughter were staying at home I deceided to use a hostel (no need for private space).
The location is perfect for the station and the royal mile and still not too far from major bus routes and shopping (Princes St).
I stayed in the big 14 bed dorm and (maybe due to the beers) never had any trouble sleeping. Always could get a hot shower and space to sit and read or listen to music in the common room.
All in all if you know what to expect from a hostel and you know what's good in Edinburgh then you'll know this is a good place to stay!

Booked on a budget and wasn't sure what to expect, but this place was fantastic value! The beds were comfortable, the staff friendly and the view from the window, over a very Christmassy city, was great! On the downside, the heaters in the room didn't seem to work and hot water was temperamental; but, for the price we paid, it was EXCELLENT VALUE. Would definitely stay there again, and recommend the place to anyone who doesn't mind cutting back on a few luxuries.
