The Marquis of Normanby Hotel was named after the 2nd Marquis of Normanby, George Augustus Constantine Phipps, who was Governor of New Zealand 1872 - 1879.

This is the original Marquis of Normanby Hotel, built in 1876. It burnt down and was rebuilt in 1924.
