Airport Lodge - London Stansted Airport, Stansted, England

On June 12th, I booked a single room in this lodge for one night (June 27th, 2009) using the Travellerspoint website. A non-refundable charge of £4.50 was billed to the credit card of my university department, and according to the booking conformation the remaining £31.49 was "due on arrival at Airport Lodge - London Stansted Airport". I was due to arrive after 10pm, so I expected that the entire amount would be charged prior to my arrival (which would have been fine with me).

On the Travellerspoint website, it was mentioned that, shortly after booking, I would receive an email directly from the Airport Lodge asking for more details about my flight. As I didn't receive that email within a few days after booking, I sent an email on June 15th to ask if the Airport Lodge needed any additional information. I also phoned the hostel several times using the phone numbers provided on their website, but nobody answered the phone.

To my surprise, I received an email on June 20th, saying my reservation had been cancelled "because we were unable to authorise the payment using the provided card details". I'm convinced that there are no problems with the university's credit card, as I have used that card for many other bookings, without any problems. A few days after I sent an email complaining about this, somebody (finally) phoned me. It turned out my reservation had indeed been cancelled, and there were no vacancies. I therefore had to book a room -at very short notice- in another hostel.

All in all, an unfortunate experience. However, the guy who spoke to me was very apologetic, and even rang me on June 26th to ask me if I still wanted a room, as someone else had cancelled. A bit too late, but a nice gesture.

This is good value budget accomodation very near Stansted airport. The rooms are basic, but clean, with just beds and a TV. There was a common bathroom, (not in the room), with a large tub with a shower. (A towel is not automatically provided, you can rent one for 1 GBP from the reception, I had my own.)There was a free wifi conection (very useful for me). The location was not so obvious to find, even though the given directions are correct: the entrance is exactly opposite the golf course entrance on the other side of the road, but I did not notice it at first. It's very near the M11 services with fast food, coffee etc. A "continental breakfast" (toast, cereal, instant coffee) was included in the price, available 7:30-9:30am (checkout is 10:00am), and there was plenty of parking space.
It's definitely not "luxury accomodation", but very adequate for staying when you have an early budget airline flight to catch.
