Valpo ambience seeps from the marrow of this passageway, where piano notes echo from the nearby music school and poinsettias are planted in claw foot tubs. You'll feel the weight of the years in the sighing staircase, stern portraits and deco armoires.

The bedrooms are enormous, filled with mismatched beds and heaped with blankets. A few have lovely harbour views, but the real motivation in coming here is to be called by name and play darts or cards in the old-fashioned drawing room. Breakfast includes real coffee , tea, milk, juice.
